2 WHY IRCHSS? Our research council dedicated to our research areas (to a degree) Its schemes are dedicated to funding academic research – Designed for PhD – Designed for Post-Doc It is (up to now) reliable and regular – once a year + special calls

3 IRCHSS statements The sole Irish funding organisation for humanities and social sciences researchers in disciplines as diverse as language, law, literature, history, business and economics IRCHSS was formally established in 1999 following a HEA report which identified the need for an independent and autonomous Research Council for the social sciences and the humanities. The Humanities and Social Sciences: The Case for a Research Council, HEA, 1998.

4 Stats Since 1999…. IRCHSS has supported over 1,473 individual PhD Scholars enhanced the careers of 335 Postdoctoral Fellows and has facilitated access for Irish researchers to international networks and European opportunities through its project funding schemes.

5 Labels Anthropology; Celtic Studies; Classics and Archaeology; Cultural Studies; Economics; Education; Environmental Studies (applications relevant to the humanities and social sciences); Film Studies; Folklore Studies; Government and Political Science; History; International Development; Irish Language Studies; Languages, Linguistics and Literatures; Law; Library and Information Studies; Management and Business; Media and Communications; Philosophy; Psychology (applications relevant to the humanities and social sciences); Religious Studies; Social and Economic Geography; Social Policy and Social Work; Sociology; Musicology and Theatre Studies (excluding applications in composition and performance); Theology.

Description of the relationship of the project to existing research (max. 600 words). Description of any specialist knowledge/data required to undertake the project (max. 400 words). Reason for choosing the institution and supervisor for the project. am (max. 400 words). Please provide detail on any proposed research trips (max. 200 words). Description of dissemination plans (max. 200 words). Detail your progress to date (max.500 words). Description of modifications made to the proposal or progress made since application where appropriate (max.200 words).
