1 THE PEOPLE IN PREHISTORY AND THEIR ACTIVITIES.

2 How Stone Age People Lived
The time period known as prehistory is often called the Stone Age because artifacts found from this period are usually simple tools made of stone. Life was not easy for prehistoric people. They spent huge amounts of time meeting their most basic survival need - the need for food. Still, prehistoric people found time for other activities. They adorned their bodies with jewelery and developed customs that reflected their religious beliefs. From time to time, they also organized large celebrations in which many people came together to eat, dance, or pray.

3 Not surprisingly, the specific activities of Stone Age people varied from place to place. Different groups found different ways to meet their needs and wants.

4 Nomads Become Farmers During most of the Stone Age, people were nomads. They travelled from place to place and gathered berries, roots, and nuts for food. They also followed herds of animals for meat and hides. When food in an area was gone, nomads moved to another area.

Some nomads learned to domesticate, or tame, animals and raise them. The wealthier nomads would keep their animals in herds. As the nomads moved from place to place searching for food, shelter and pastureland, they would take their animals with them. These herds weren't very large because of the effort it would take to move the animals from place to place. This new way of living was called pastoral migration. People moved to find food for themselves and pastures for their animals.

6 Near the end of the Stone Age, people began to settle down
Near the end of the Stone Age, people began to settle down. They learned how to plant crops. This change took place over thousands of years in different parts of the world. By the end of the Stone Age, many nomads were now farmers.
