Making REDD Work for the Poor: Introduction to REDD work carried out by PEP (from Copenhagen to Bali and beyond ….) Maria Berlekom SwedBio Swedish Biodiversity Centre
The start.. PEP11, Copenhagen: Two main topics were on the agenda (climate change and PES) - REDD emerged as a major issue from both - A critical process happening NOW - Will have a major implications - Key opportunity: But are implications for the poor addressed? A working group formed (UNDP, IUCN, ADB, UNEP, SwedBio) Funding: UNDP, DFID, Sida
PEP´s potential and added value Unique credibility: Strong commitment and track record in poverty eradication and environmental sustainability issues: credibilti Unique competence: Substantial individual and collective project and policy experience
Main objectives Build consensus on key principles for pro- poor REDD - promote win-win options (co- benefits) Develop robust guidelines for monitoring and evaluating the social impacts of REDD. (In addition: possibly country-level work)
Planned deliverables 1.Analytical paper 2.Side event during Forest Day (8 Dec) during UNFCC13, Bali 3.Short summary with key messages 4.Possibly side event/activity during CBD COP9, Bonn 5.Possibly joint PEP activities at country level
