6  What is cardiovascular disease (CVD)? › A disease that affects the heart or blood vessels  What are the 2 types of CVD? › Hypertension › Atherosclerosis

7  High blood pressure  Can damage blood vessels and heart over a long period of time  Most common in people over the age of 35  Prevention = eating healthy, exercising regularly, and managing your weight

8  A disease where there is an accumulation of plaque on artery walls  Typically caused by unhealthy food choices high in saturated fats and cholesterol  Can lead to stroke and heart attacks

11  What is a tumor? › An abnormal mass of tissue that has no natural role in the body › 2 types:  Benign: non-cancerous; grows slowly without spreading  Malignant: cancerous; spreads to other organs and parts of the body

12  Also known as carcinoma  Symptoms = changes on the skin, a mole or freckle that changes, or a sore that won’t heal  Can be detected by a physical exam and removed by a biopsy
