2 What is GRSP Began in 1946 as a dream of Will Watt Kendall Weisinger and Atlanta RC began a similar program Students from war torn Countries to study in GA Colleges & Universities An International Service program older than TRF Ambassadorial Scholars

3 How GRSP Works This is NOT AN EXCHANGE PROGRAM Rotary Clubs world wide are invited to nominate student candidates Qualifying candidates are published to all Rotary Clubs in Georgia Clubs select students to sponsor at a nearby college or university. Clubs assign host families for students Students must reside in dorms

4 Trustees Primary contact between Club and GRSP Primary contact between Student and Club Three Year Terms Maximum of 2 full terms Must be a Past President or Secretary Nominated by GRSP District Chair and appointed by District Governor

5 Endowment Committee Advisory Trustees Responsible for Endowment Fund Primary contact with clubs for contributions to the Endowment Fund Also appointed by District Governor from nominees from District Vice-Chair

6 Scholarship Information One Scholastic Year, No Repeats School will be Selected by Club All phases of School Admission by GRSP Must Be Single Must be 18 by 8/1 but not 25 by 8/1 entry yr. Previous Study in USA for more than 4 months disqualified If Applicant Rejected by School, the Offer Withdrawn

7 Student Responsibilities Students must attend Conclave & District Conference (Host District Only) Students must reside in dorms and attend classes Host Families are expected to coordinate holiday activities Students must present at least 2 club programs for each sponsoring club.

8 Student Responsibilities, Cont’d Our students are expected to conduct themselves in a higher manner that other students as they are representing GRSP, Rotary and their home country.

9 Student Selection Process Home Office Publishes Qualified Applicants Clubs Select Preferred Applicants Trustees Draft Applicants based on Club Preferences Home Office Notifies Applicants Home Office Submits Entrance Forms to School Club/Line Trustee Notified After 1)Applicant Accepts and 2)School Issues I-20

10 History of Scholarship Funding $1 per GA Rotarian = $4000 (1946-47) Now $7 per Rotarian Host club & Endowment Fund GRSP receives NO $ from RI

11 History of the Endowment Fund Started late 1970’s Goal to build sound financial base $5,300,000 raised Only earnings used Presently pays $1800 cost of student

12 Restraints to Funding Scholars Club Participation: GRSP has limited control. Can encourage Clubs College Costs: GRSP has NO CONTROL but gets “In-State” fee Endowment Fund: Most effective way we have to fund the needs of the program.

13 Benefits of a Healthy Fund Reduce Club’s Portion of Costs Offer More Clubs Opportunity Reduce the District per capita Support Special Cases Number of Scholars limited only by desires of clubs to support through contribution and hosting

14 Endowment Fund Investment Committee 4 Trustees appointed by Chair Oversee the Investing Policy Goal to Protect the Corpus while providing a steady stream of income Both Fixed Income and Equity Holdings Day-to-day fund mgt by professional

15 Recognition Levels All gifts are cumulative Sustaining Member $100. Governor’s Associate $500. Will Watt Fellow$1000.

16 Recognition Levels Cont’d (All gifts are cumulative) Hue Thomas Fellow: $2500. Kendall Weisinger Fellow: $5000. Named Fund: $10,000. Named Scholar: $100,000.
