Are You Blessed? Pastor Timothy Hinkle October 20, 2013

2 Matthew 5: 1-18 1 And seeing the multitudes, He went up into a mountain: and when He was set His disciples came unto Him: 2 And He opened His mouth, and taught them, saying,

3 3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven
3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

4 6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. 7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

5 8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God
8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

6 10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

7 11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. 12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you

8 13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

9 14 Ye are the light of the world
14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

10 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. 17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.

11 18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

12 Blessed μακάριος / makarios / mak-ar'-ee-os
A prolonged form of the poetical μάκαρ (makar--meaning the same); supremely blest; by extension fortunate, well off: - blessed, happy (happier).

13 Blessed This means more than the emotional state represented by the word “happy.” It includes spiritual well-being, having the approval of God, and thus a happier destiny

14 Psalm 1:1-2 1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. 2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

15 Poor In Spirit 3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

16 Poor In Spirit Those with the greater spiritual need are more likely to perceive their need and depend on God alone and not their own goodness.

17 4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
The context indicates that these are mourning over sin and evil, especially their own, and over the failure of mankind to give proper glory to God.

18 5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
The meekness in view is spiritual meekness, an attitude of humility and submission to God. Our pattern for meekness is Jesus who submits to the will of His Father.

19 They which do hunger & thirst after righteousness
6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. Those who seek God’s righteousness receive what they desire, not those who are confident of their own righteousness.

20 7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
Matthew 6:  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. 14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

21 The merciful Matthew 18:  And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him. 35 So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.

22 The merciful Mark 11:26 But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses. Luke 6:37 Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:

23 The merciful Luke 11:4 And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. Luke 17:4 And if he trespass against thee seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turn again to thee, saying, I repent; thou shalt forgive him.

24 The merciful Luke 23:34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots. Ephesians 4:32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.

25 8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God
Clean, pure, spotless….on the inside, not just on the outside for appearances. This reminds us that God knows our thoughts and motives.

26 The peacemakers 9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. Spiritual peace, not the cessation of physical violence between nations, is in view.  Those who help others find peace with God and others in the body of Christ

27 The peacemakers It is important to Christ that his body are at peace with one another. Look what he prayed in the Garden before going to the cross for us in… John 17:21  That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

28 Those who are persecuted for righteousness sake
10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. This means persecuted because you are being “like” Christ!

29 YOU 11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake

30 YOU 12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

31 Life application Each believer in Jesus Christ should strive to demonstrate each of these attributes, remembering though, that it is only through Christ, belief in Him as the Son of God who died in his/her place on Calvary, and then was raised by God from the dead, that we obtain eternal life.

32 Life application In this life, if we allow the Holy Spirit to enable us to demonstrate (live out) each one of these attributes, then we will be viewed by the world as Christ was.

33 Life application We will lead some to repentance and new life in Christ, and others will persecute us as they did Christ! REJOICE!

34 Our Prayer Today “Dear Heavenly Father, we come to you in the matchless name of Jesus Christ, Your Son who died on Calvary for our sins and for the sins of the world. We repent of our sins, and ask that You forgive us for every one of them. We confess the name of Jesus as our Lord and Savior, Your son, and believe You raised Him from the dead. Now Father, we ask that Jesus will baptize us afresh with fire and the Holy Spirit today and that Your Holy Spirit will enable us to be more like HIM! In Jesus name we pray, AMEN”
