1 Q & A Continence in practice 25/06/2015

2 82 year old female, living in residential aged care due to dementia (Alzheimer Disease) Was living at home with daughter, but daughter now has own health issues so couldn’t continue to care for her mother at home. Independently mobile, but disoriented despite living in facility for 6 weeks. Had been continent at home with support of daughter, and in a familiar environment where she had lived for many years. Is continent of bowels (regular habit which was easily identified by staff and worked with), but incontinent of urine. Unable to locate toilet, doesn’t indicate that needs to void, so often urgency even when staff are aware of need, hurries and looks in multiple areas for a toilet, has voided in others bedrooms and in dining room, removes pads when feels need to void, gets up overnight and has had a ‘near miss’ fall. MSU clear, no retention. Case Study 1

3 87 year old male, usually lives at home with wife and community support, in respite for two weeks whilst his wife is on holiday. Alert, cooperative, managing well during his respite time. All medical issues, including known ca prostate, are under control. He has limited knowledge and understanding of his medical situation. Long term IDC – 16G clear silastic long-term catheter. Shouldn’t need changing during his 2 week respite, so no details were provided ie. no reason for the catheter in his notes. It is Saturday, 4pm. The catheter appears to be blocked. Case Study 2

4 Thank you.
