7. END OF YEAR ASSESSMENTS IN YEAR 1 Key Stage 1 and 2 Assessment model (2014-15) The new bands are linked to the year that pupils are in. So Year 1 pupils would be expected to be on Band 1. This band describes the content and the skills within the Year 1 curriculum. The end of year expectation is that a Year 1 pupil should have reached a secure understanding within their curriculum journey, thus receiving 1 Secure. It is worth remembering that the new national curriculum has greater challenge and raised expectations within it so pupils who were achieving the equivalent of a Level 1a in the old curriculum would not necessarily be considered a 1 Secure. The old levels and the new bands are not comparable. Also pupils progress at different speeds so some children may not yet be working at Band 1. Below band 1 – Pupils are not yet fully accessing the Year 1 curriculum and their teacher prepares an alternative curriculum when necessary so that they can catch up with skills that are required for Band 1. 1 Emerging – Pupils have accessed the curriculum for their age and show an emerging understanding of skills and concepts studied and are working towards age related expectations. 1 Developing - Pupils have accessed the curriculum for their age and are developing their understanding of skills and concepts studied and are working towards age related expectations. 1 Secure – Pupils have a secure understanding of the skills and concepts of the curriculum and are working at the expected standard for their age. 1 Mastery - Pupils have explored the curriculum at greater depth and built on the breadth of their knowledge and skills, showing mastery.
