7 An outpatient (or out-patient) is a patient who is not hospitalized for 24 hours or more but whovisits a hospital, clinic, or associated facility fordiagnosis or treatment. Treatment provided in thisfashion is called ambulatory care.Sometimes surgery is performed without the needfor a formal hospital admission or an overnightstay. This is called outpatient surgery. Outpatientsurgery has many benefits, including reducing theamount of medication prescribed and using thephysician's or surgeon's time more efficiently.More procedures are now being performed in asurgeon`s office, termed office-based surgery, rather than in a hospital-based operating room.Outpatient surgery is suited best for healthypatients undergoing minor or intermediateprocedures (limited urologic, ophthalmologic, orear, nose, and throat procedures and proceduresinvolving the extremities).

8 An inpatient (or in-patient ) is "admitted" to the hospital and staysovernight or for an indeterminatetime, usually several days or weeks(though some cases, such as comapatients, have been in hospitals foryears). Treatment provided in thisfashion is called inpatient care. The admission to the hospitalinvolves the production of anadmission note. The leaving of the hospital isofficially termed discharge, and involves a corresponding discharge note.

9 A day patient or ( day-patient ) is a patient who is using the full rangeof services of a hospital or clinic butis not expected to stay the night. The term was originally used bypsychiatric hospital services usingof this patient type to care forpeople needing support to make thetransition from in-patient to out-patient care. However, the term is now alsoheavily used for people attendinghospitals for day surgery.
