2 Our work in Cumbria Goes back a long way – Foot and Mouth Disease 2001, Carlisle floods of 2005 and, most recently Hull Floods of 2007…

3 The Hull study Two-year project, funded by EA, ESRC and EPSRC Focus on Hull where over 8,600 homes affected Aim: To explore people’s experiences of long-term flood recovery. Project has many practical applications – for example, learning how to improve support for people who are affected by flooding in future…

4 Methods – flood experts Intensive, qualitative study 45 people: “what, when and how?” Initial interview – the story so far… Open structure diaries (up to 18 months) Group discussions Steering group Feeding into policy also – the Pitt Review and DEFRA consultations on property-level flood resistance and resilience methods and the National Flood Emergency Framework www.lec.lancs.ac.uk/cswm/hfp
