3 2. What public services did people need in Victorian London? NeedsPublic services A police force Public transportation Water service Sewer service To help keep order To help people get around the growing city To supply people with drinking water To keep people from drinking untreated water from the River Thames (sanitation and health)

4 3. What characteristics are there in Victorian London? Social classes: Londoners at the time generally could be divided into upper, middle, working, and under classes. Ethnic diversity: London grew as people from other parts of Britain and outside the country came to live there.

5 4. What economic activities are common in Victorian London? All types of businesses from street stalls to major factories - The Industrial Revolution changed the nature of the work. - Connected to the world by the Themes, the city attracted all types of businesses. The development of the building industry - New roads, railways, and housings were needed to accommodate the fast-growing population.

8 On Level Activity Aspects of city life Victorian London Transportation Buses - to help Londoners get around the growing city / they were powered by horses The Metropolitan Railway – to relieve traffic congestion, London built an underground train system / railroads made travel faster and helped the city grow Other services A police force-with the growing city came a rising crime rate. / to keep order, the city needed to prevent and investigate crime. Water, sewer service – many Londoner’s died of diseases like cholera / the reason was to drink untreated water from the River Themes / London’s sewer system fed directly into the river / London’s water supply and sewer system needed to be cleaned Social classes & Ethnic diversity With the evolutions of mass production, rapid growth also affected London society as different social classes interacted.
