11 English Imaginative writing

Simile  Asks us to picture one ting as being similar to another and uses the words ‘like’, ‘as’ or ‘than’ to create the comparison in our minds.  As cool as a cucumber  As slippery as an eel  Like a house on fire

Metaphor  The metaphor asks us to take one more step further than the simile.  Instead of asking us to picture one thing as being like another, we are asked to picture one thing as being another.  The sun is like a golden coin (simile)  The sun is a golden coin (metaphor)

Symbolisation  In our lives we are continually encountering symbols. The symbol for a large yellow ‘M’ for instance, stands for McDonalds Fast Food.  So basically symbolism is where the use of one specific concrete object stands for one or more abstract ideas.

Parody  A parody is an imitation that pokes fun of an original concept. Usually the original is serious and maybe even pretentious.  The parody usually copies structure, metre and much of the language, but replaces the original subject with something much more trivial.

Hyperbole  Is a figure of speech that uses deliberate exaggeration in order to emphasise something.  The purpose of hyperbole is to emphasise in order to make more dramatic or vivid.  It is not intended to flagrantly deceive.

Alliteration  This is the repetition of consonants, especially at the beginning of words.  It can be used to create rhythm or musical effects.  But it is especially useful to focus the reader’s or viewer’s attention on certain qualities or attributes.

Personification  Personification is a particular form of metaphor in which an object or an idea is spoken of as though it has human characteristics.  Fire raced with giant strides through the dry grass.  (Fire, which has no legs, strides like a human)
