TIGER TEACHES University of Colorado at Boulder October 21, 2010 CIRTL Network Meeting PJ Bennett, Ph.D. Assistant Director Graduate Teacher Program
What is it? TIGER TEACHES… –funds small teaching as research projects in the STEM disciplines. –The participating graduate students get a one time $2500 stipend for a semester long project. –Graduate students must have a faculty mentor in the department they are doing their research in. –Graduate students are selected on the strength and feasibility of their proposals.
The Course Research Proposal Each proposal will –identify the course –identify a question or hypothesis to test –select a methodology –develop an assessment process We do help the graduate students refine their answers to these questions. Lastly, all funded proposals are required to go through IRB approval.
What we require By the end of the Semester –Data will be written up as a report for TIGER and CIRTL and have the for potential publication.
What we encourage To present their research observations to the discipline-based education research (DBER) group at CU Boulder. To apply for the CIRTL Exchange program.

Note Taking (Proposal) GEOG 1020, ASTR 1120, ASTR 1110, ASTR 1010 Does use of a laptop computer or electronic device help or harm student learning? data collection will include: survey questions, designed to gather demographic data and method of note taking; observations of students note taking; qualitative interviews with students; and exam and clicker scores. The students note taking will be correlated with their attitudes and test scores.

Student Attitudes (Proposal) Geology 1030 What are the attitudes of students in the redesigned Geology 1030 course with respect to the addition of online components and local geology examples? Data will be collected by: Online Pre and Post tests, and final exam scores Exam scores and pre post test will be compared to determine how student attitudes impact learning.
Projects that did not work We had two projects that did not work out One project was in the math department. However, the math department decided to do a project on Calculus III that involved all of the sections. The second was in chemistry. However, it turned out that the student would only be looking at already collected data this semester.
