Good afternoon everyone. My name is Maranda McLaren and I am the global business development director for the Library Solutions group in Civica. I would like to thank TOP Information Technology for this kind invitation to be part of the 8th annual Spydus Users group meeting in Taiwan.
This is my first visit to Taiwan and I am very much enjoying your country.
Civica is very committed to our relationship with TOP and our customer base here. With over 60 Taiwanese libraries using Spydus to run their business, some having been clients for over 10 years, we see your country as one of our most significant markets.
As you will see later today, we are launching our next version of the product here today. Having invested significantly in the development of a fully Unicode version, to allow us to offer a local language version, Taiwan is the first country we will be offering our Chinese language version of the product.
Working closely with TOP we are very excited about bringing our Unicode version of Spydus 8 to Taiwan.
Today I wanted to share with you a little bit about Civica as a company, our vision for Libraries into the future and how we strive to be Libraries preferred partner globally.

So what does Civica see as the future for Libraries ?? As a society, people are becoming increasingly time poor and more and more wanting answers, not information.
As the internet continues to become more pervasive in our society, people have come to expect and even demand the ease and convenience of online services. Libraries services are no different and increasingly they must provide their patrons with the flexibility to find, reserve and collect information and materials at their choice of time and place.
We also see that Libraries are no longer just the physical space in a community where its members visit to pursue their intellectual and cultural pursuits. Touching a wide diversity of clientele, across the generations, libraries can be the space to engage the individual and the community larger.
Creating learning centres is something we are seeing, across the globe with our library clients. We are also seeing an increasing emergence of Libraries as community centres.
Providing extended services, whether it be private or public, such as council services, tourism information, even support groups for young mothers or new immigrants, Libraries, for Civica, are much more than a bearer of knowledge. There is no doubt that libraries play a significant role within the communities that they support and as such have a very unique opportunity.

Keep it simple for you. At Civica we have the approach of providing our customers an end to end solution. We provide our clients with services from collection design services, library staff, RFID solutions including Self Check as well as the library management software.
Listening to our customers. Our user groups are a pivotal part of our development, design and marketing team. We hold workshop sessions on a regular basis and this feedback is used to help set our strategic direction.

Why is our approach so important ??
Over the last 30 years information technology has exploded into our worlds with a change so rapid that few have managed to keep pace. These years have seen 4 distinct generations in technology resulting in a discrete set of functionality and opportunities it can provide ;
- from the disparate systems of the 80’s providing file read/write functionality
to the 2nd generation of the 90’s introducing text-based file sharing and information interrogation through the introduction of the relational database.
The late 90’s heralded the introduction of the GUI interface, totally revolutionising the ways we interacted with our systems. And now as we move through the 4th generation the Web and its interfaces are allowing us to go places we never dreamed to go.
For other Library systems this change in technology has resulted in a need to develop a completely new Systems for each generation, requiring re-learning and the creation of new workflows.
Not for Spydus.
Now in its 4th generation, Spydus provides a functionally rich, web centric application built around open system concepts. We have made it easy for our client, gradually evolving our system to new features and functionality as technology has expanded.

Whilst no one can truly predict where technology and library services will be in five or ten years time, Spydus’s approach of ongoing innovation will ensure that we remain at the forefront of library services, anticipating the future and working with you as you evolve with the future.
To enable this future we have made some significant investments in the core platform we use to develop and support our product. By developing in c++ , porting to a MS base and using dot net deployment, we are able to develop, install and maintain more easily and more cost effectively than any other platform.

In this, we understand that we need to be more than a Library Management Software package. As the services that you provide have expanded so has our offerings.
Today Civica is working with our clients providing :
Manpower services, this extends from collection review and design services to providing the staff to run your library
helping libraries with enhanced security services by offering an RFID solution that is totally integrated within the software package. This means that information is real time and accurate. We also use Ultra High frequency technology in our RFID solution which provides a greater read range and faster read service than any of the competitive solutions on the market.
We also offer a Self Service solution that frees up time for the library staff by automating the issues and returns for the borrowers. Again, totally integrated as part of the Spydus solution this becomes a seamless new offering for your borrowers.
Other extended services are also offered. Booking functionality for the reservation of PC’s room, and other equipment and extended payment, services through our Cash Management module are examples of us responding to the emerging requirements of our Library customers.

9. Singapore MOE S$54m over 5 years

I would like to talk now briefly about a case study where we are providing an end to end solution for one of our customers.
The case study is for the Singaporean Ministry of Education. MOE came to the market for a Library Management System in The Department supports over 330 schools and they realised that they had very little consistency in the way their Library services were being supplied within each school. There was little automation and they had very little visibility to how much was spent and what it was being spent on. Looking initially for just a library management software package we worked with the Ministry to truly understand their challenges. What came out was that they really didn’t have the resources to run their libraries consistently across the 330 schools and where looking for a way to enhance the services they were able to provide the students.
Recognising that the Ministry needed more than just a software package we put together a solution that provide a complete source library service. Within this solution we provide the staff to design the collection, purchase the collections, catalogue the collections and librarianship services to most of the libraries.

Rolling this out in a three phased process, Civica has delivered the first two phased on time and in budget. We are well on the track for Phase 3 and already the Ministry is looking to extend the services it employs from Civica.
