CIVA / FAI Seminar CIVA / FAI Seminar What IS a Judge? A competition aerobatic sequence is a demonstration of aeroplane control requiring extreme levels of technical ability and discipline from the Pilot. The Pilot attempts to convince the Judges that the figures are flown exactly according to the rules. The Judges view the performance to discover where the rules are not fully met. They award downgrades for imperfections and errors seen. An aerobatic Judge must use ALL of these skills to mark the performance properly.

CIVA / FAI Seminar CIVA / FAI Seminar THE ABILITY TO DEDUCT MARKS ACCURATELY AND QUICKLY WHILE WATCHING A SEQUENCE FULL KNOWLEDGE OF THE RULES KEEN EYESIGHT TEAMWORK

CIVA / FAI Seminar CIVA / FAI Seminar LEARN THE RULES: Download and print a full copy of the P or G CIVA Section-6 Regulations, read the Judging Rules and understand how to apply them PRACTICE “CALLING” for other Judges: Being able to Call is by far the best preparation! Get used to being a TEAM MEMBER: Judging is always a co-operative venture Go and Scribe, then Call … then Judge

CIVA / FAI Seminar CIVA / FAI Seminar Eye test anyone ??

CIVA / FAI Seminar CIVA / FAI Seminar OK - THE BASICS Do you need glasses? Take an Eye Test! Is the prescription up to date? Have a spare pair of glasses, sun glasses too Take a comfortable chair, an umbrella etc. Take some sun screen – don’t be the sun-burned Judge! Have some spare pens and pencils Make sure you have plenty of water available Have a good sun hat Get up and walk around regularly between sequences Always have a copy of the appropriate BAeA / CIVA rules Have a spare clipboard and some elastic bands Take some peppermints or sweets – you’ll talk a lot ….

CIVA / FAI Seminar CIVA / FAI Seminar At CIVA tests for judges, very few judges get better that 85%. We should aim for 100% Have the most up to date rules We can make sure by checking the CIVA web site for rule changes following the CIVA meeting held in the last quarter of each year We need to KNOW the RULES

CIVA / FAI Seminar CIVA / FAI Seminar 2015 CIVA Rules Run ‘Zoom Round the Rules’ PowerPoint

CIVA / FAI Seminar CIVA / FAI Seminar A figure that receives ten or more downgrades must be awarded a Numeric Zero = 0.0 When you see cumulative errors in roll / pitch / yaw that are more than 45° but less than 90° you should award a Numeric Zero = 0.0 Subjective personal Judgement: No Video General description of the Zero rules:- Critical figure errors classified as Perception Errors should be awarded a Perception Zero = PZ Where a Major Error is seen …. an element is flown in the wrong direction, some part of the figure is different to the Aresti symbols shown on the Form-B / C, or there is more than 90° of cumulative error seen …. the figure must be awarded a Hard Zero = HZ Clear matters of Fact: Video

CIVA / FAI Seminar CIVA / FAI Seminar If a flick-roll starts with insufficient pitch or yaw demonstrated to meet the criteria, or is so deeply pitched that the auto-rotation is slow to start, or you think the roll is primarily driven by significant use of aileron, then you “Perceive” that the rules have not been satisfied and you should award a PZ. These ‘bad’ elements of the manoeuvre take place very quickly and cannot be proven by video. However …. If the figure subsequently contains a clear error of fact, for example the rotation angle is wrong by more than 90° or it is a positive flick instead of negative flick, then the PZ becomes a Hard Zero because the error can be proven by reviewing the video. The change from PZ to HZ can also occur with Spins and Tail Slides, where the PZ is driven by an un-stalled entry or inadequate length of slide. In each case the factual HZ always supersedes the perceived PZ because the error can be reviewed using the video.
