2 Activity With a partner you will make a budget for a single person living 1 month in SR. Then do the same for a family of 4. Include the following expenses in your budget: Food Child care Medical Housing Transportation Other Expenses About how much would you need per month and per year for a single person and a family of 4? How much would you need to make per hour (40 hours a week) to cover expenses?

3 Based on the chart how much were your budgeting estimations off by? How difficult would it be to live on minimum wage in SR? How difficult would it be for a family of 4 even if both parents were making minimum wage?? How close are you to poverty when you’re making minimum wage?

5 Who is poor? The poverty rate: Is the percentage of people that live in households below the official poverty line. The poverty line an income threshold which represents the limit of a livable wage.

7 Causes of Poverty Lack of Education Those without a high school diploma make on avg. slightly over the poverty line. Without access to good young people are much more likely to be impoverished. Location Some areas have much higher employment rates than others. High crime rates can lead to greater difficulty to achieve success. Shifts in Family Structure Single parenting and divorce lead to greater expenses and higher rates of child poverty.

10 What advantages do you have in your life in terms of supporting your success? short term poverty effects and which have long term poverty effects There are numerous factors that lead to poverty. In groups you will be given a topic and you are to come up with ways in which this topic can play a roll in poverty. Look back at your list and mark which issues have: Do you think that some members of society are more vulnerable than others to these circumstances? Why or why not?

12 The Poverty Rate for white americans in 2010 was 13% The Poverty Rate for African americans in 2010 was 27.4% and Latinos 26.6% If you are born black or Latino in the US there is great than a 1 in 4 chance that you will experience poverty.

13 Obviously there is a link between Race and Poverty... Think back to our last day of class. What were some of the issues we discussed that may lead one to poverty? Which of these are less likely to affect non-dominant groups (groups that have historically been oppressed)? What might make it tough for non-dominant groups to rise out of their circumstances? Which of these circumstances are these groups in control of and which are institutionalized (out of their power to change)?

14 One of the most important institutional factors that lead future success or poverty are schools. One main indicator as to a schools educational level are access to AP classes and exams.
