5 OTHER HEALTH IMPAIRMENT  Having limited strength, vitality or alertness, including a heightened sense of sensitivity to environmental stimuli, that results in limited alertness with respect to the educational environment  Is due to chronic or acute health problems such as asthma, attention deficit disorder or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, diabetes, epilepsy, a heart condition, hemophilia, lead poisoning, leukemia, nephritis, rheumatic fever, or sickle cell anemia  Adversely affects a child’s educational performance

9  Areas of Learning Disabilities  Basic Reading Skills  Reading Fluency Skills  Reading Comprehension  Mathematical Calculation  Mathematical Problem Solving  Written Expression  Oral Expression  Listening Comprehension  Illinois requires the use of a process based on scientific, research-based interventions as part of the evaluation procedures for SLD.  The 8 areas are the only academic areas inclusive of SLD. It is required that student data focus on achievement, not processing data. SPECIFIC LEARNING DISABILITY

10  Exclusionary Criteria:  Student’s difficulties cannot be the result of other factors  Visual, hearing, or motor disability  Emotional disability  Cultural factors  Environmental or Economic factors  Limited English Proficiency

14 AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER Imagine this……

15 AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER  Developmental disability significantly affecting verbal and nonverbal communication and social interaction, evident before age three, that adversely affects the child’s educational performance.  Typical characteristics: repetitive activities and stereotyped movements, resistance to environmental change or change in daily routines, and unusual responses to sensory experiences.  The term does not apply if a child’s educational performance is adversely affected primarily because the child has an emotional disturbance.
