RAC Back Office

Major Equipment Refreshes  Refresh of Sun shared memory environment – focus on large memory and data- intensive applications  Valuable to many CS, CIS, and Informatics researchers

Building National Prominence in Advanced Research at SC 2002

INDIANA UNIVERSITY CLUSTERS ACHIEVE MILESTONES “Indiana University's AVIDD (Analysis and Visualization of Instrument- Driven Data) facility has achieved a calculation rate of 1.02 Teraflops, or just over one trillion mathematical operations per second.” – 27 June 03 IBM Announces Life Sciences Institutes of Innovation Program Indiana University and Johns Hopkins University Are First Honored – 26 June 03 http://www-3.ibm.com/solutions/lifesciences/news/innovation.html IBM Life Sciences > IBM To Develop Advanced Biomedical Research System “Indiana University announced that it has been working with IBM to create a powerful information system at the IU School of Medicine that could transform the hunt for the origins of disease and effective remedies.” – 15 July 03 Co-creating the Future

Today’s News  IU and Purdue formed IP-grid in our proposal to the NSF  IU-Purdue join NCSA, ArgonneNL, SDSC, CalTech, and PSC – the elite high- performance computational/research community.  Quid-pro-quo – we contribute computation, storage, and data resources and NSF funds our connectivity to the nearest ‘hub’… Chicago!

What Does IP-Grid Mean for IU?  We will acquire a pair of fibers and run advanced dense-wave-division- multiplexing (DWDM) connectivity across it  IU and Purdue will each have a 10- Gbit Wave connecting us to the TeraGrid backplane  We will have co-location facilities in a key carrier facility in downtown Chicago

What Does IP-Grid Mean for IU?  We will have the ability to add more waves to get other kinds of connectivity in Chicago Maybe even cheaper commodity internet  We will have a network ‘beach-head’ in one of the largest network ‘hubs’ in the nation/world We may be able to overcome some peering issues with national high-speed internet services to homes We can connect to others as the national cyberinfrastructure grows

Front Office Accomplishments Expansion of statistical software at IUPUI Continuation of SPSS Enterprise License Agreement Broad dissemination of information about IU’s advanced IT facilities Revamped Unix System Support Group’s Systems Administration Ed/Cert Class

R&D Disclosures 7 inventions disclosed since 1997 6 open source software commercialization permitted John-E-Box design licensed and now in commercial production by an Indiana firm

Mellon Foundation grant helps create digital video archive of world music BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- A new world of music from around the globe will soon be available to students and scholars. A research team from Indiana University and the University of Michigan has received an $875,000 grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation… 5 May 2003 Digital Libraries… Co-creating & Production

Production Digital Library Services

RAC Priorities 03-04  Production and frontiers AVIDD Indiana Genomics Initiative IT Core  Open new RAC front office at IUPUI  Outreach to help build the workforce of tomorrow (high schools, etc.)  Renew visualization infrastructure  Integration of digital library initiative  Publicize scientific achievements (with CPO)
