3. “ Using Digital Video Technology in the Classroom ” teaches pre-service teachers how to plan a project- based activity. The project provides instruction on the uses of video production to support the cognitive development of their pupils. Two sections of EDIT 2000 at UGA’s College of Education Department of Instructional Technology received this instruction.

4. This is an overall view of our Unit 2 ICM.

5. Unit Goal: Producing a Video Product. Students will be able to generate a video artifact using original footage shot with a digital video camera and/or footage imported from other sources. This unit has three lessons.

Lesson 1a: SWBAT Demonstrate Basic Video Shooting Skills by shooting footage according to specifications from instructor For this lesson our students receive: A- Document handout- Identify Camera Parts and How to Shoot B- Document handout- Checking Out the Camcorder C- Document handout- Video Shoot Assignment D- Our originally-produced video- Basic Video Shooting and Setup Lesson 1b: SWBAT Demonstrate Basic Video Setup Skills by connecting video camera to computer and with firewire cable and starting a new project in I-Movie

Lesson 2: SWBAT Demonstrate Basic Video Editing Procedures by isolating video clips, adding titles, and adding transitions For this lesson our students receive: A- Document handout- Video Clips, Transitions, and Titles Lesson 3: SWBAT Demonstrate Basic Video Exporting and Dubbing Skills by exporting edited video to QuickTime and to digital tape, and dubbling from digital tape to VHS tape For this lesson our students receive: A- Document handout- Exporting and Dubbing

9. Selected examples of students’ reflections upon completion of their own video project ‘I really enjoyed creating this project. I felt that I was forced to examine my motives for teaching, and I had to evaluate my philosophy of learning. I think that this type of technology could be beneficial in the classroom in a variety of ways’ Surprisingly, I really enjoyed making the video… for this class last week. We were dreading it because we both hate watching ourselves on camera, but we ended up having a blast. It was fun ….. ‘This was a great project! The instructional video watched in class on using a camcorder was extremely helpful …’

10. More student reflections on their projects ‘I really enjoyed making this iMovie. We had one of my neighbors involved in it, and it was a lot of fun…’ ‘The digital video project was very fun and interesting because it was very hands on and allowed us to work with the I-Movie program. I thought it would be more difficult to work with ….’ ‘… I enjoyed being able to put my thoughts on film. It was also great getting to know my partner a little more….’
