The Church’s One Foundation CW #538 Verses 1-5 Text: Samuel J. Stone, 1839-1900 Setting: AURELIA Tune: Samuel S. Wesley, 1810-76

Verse 1: The Church's one foundation Is Jesus Christ, her Lord; She is his new creation By water and the Word. From heav'n he came and sought her To be his holy bride; With his own blood he bought her, And for her life he died.

Verse 2: Elect from ev'ry nation, Yet one o'er all the earth; Her charter of salvation: One Lord, one faith, one birth. One holy name she blesses, Partakes one holy food, And to one hope she presses, With ev'ry grace endued.

Verse 3: The Church shall never perish Her dear Lord, to defend, To guide, sustain, and cherish, Is with her to the end. Though there be those that hate her And strive to see her fail, Against both foe and traitor She ever shall prevail.

Verse 4: Though with a scornful wonder The world sees her oppressed, By schisms rent asunder, By heresies distressed, Yet saints their watch are keeping; Their cry goes up, "How long?" And soon the night of weeping Shall be the morn of song.

Verse 5: Mid toil and tribulation And tumult of her war She waits the consummation Of peace forevermore Till with the vision glorious Her longing eyes are blest And the great Church victorious Shall be the Church at rest.

Pastor: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you. All: And also with you. Invocation

Confession of Sin Pastor: Our Savior Jesus Christ commanded baptism when he said; “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” All of us are born into this world with a deep need for baptism.

Confession of Sin Pastor: From our parents we inherit a sinful nature; we are without true fear of God and true faith in God and are condemned to eternal death. But Jesus took away our sin by giving his life on the cross. At our baptism he clothes us with the robe of his righteousness and gives us a new life.

Confession of Sin Pastor: Our sinful nature need not control us any longer. We recall what baptism means for our daily lives as we speak these words:

Confession of Sin All: Baptism mean that the sinful nature in us should be drowned by daily sorrow and repentance, and that all its evil deeds and desires be put to death.

Confession of Sin All: It also means that a new person should daily arise to live before God in righteousness and purity forever.

Confession of Sin Pastor: As baptized children of God we confess our sins:

Confession of Sin All: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful, and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity.

Confession of Sin All: But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

(Pastor announces our forgiveness) All: Amen.

Sacrament of Baptism Pastor: In obedience to the command of our Lord and trusting in his promise, you have brought this child to be baptized. Jesus told us: “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.”

Sacrament of Baptism Pastor: It is in baptism that God grants the new life of forgiveness, joy, and peace to little children. By the power of God’s Word, this gracious water of life washes away sin, delivers from death and the devil, and gives eternal salvation to all who believe.

Sacrament of Baptism Pastor: Receive the sign of the cross on the head and heart to mark you as a redeemed child of Christ.

Pastor: Brothers and sisters in Christ: Our Lord commands that we teach his precious truths to all who are baptized. Christian love therefore urges all of us, especially parents, to assist in whatever manner possible so that this child may remain a child of God until death. Exhortation

Pastor: If you are willing to carry out this responsibility, then answer: Yes, as God gives me strength. All: Yes, as God gives me strength. Exhortation

Pastor: Let us pray: (Pastor says prayer) All: Amen.

Prayer of the Day Pastor: Let us pray. (Pastor says the prayer of the day) All: Amen.

Children’s Message

Built on the Rock CW #529 Verses 1-5 Text: Nikolai F. S. Grundtvig, 1783-1872, Setting: KIRKEN DEN ER ET GAMMELT HUS Tune: Ludvig M. Lindeman, 1812-87,

Verse 1: Built on the Rock the Church shall stand Even when steeples are falling. Crumbled have spires in ev'ry land; Bells still are chiming and calling, Calling the young and old to rest, But above all the soul distressed, Longing for rest everlasting.

Verse 2: Surely in temples made with hands God, the Most High, is not dwelling High above earth his temple stands, All earthly temples excelling. Yet he who dwells in heav'n above Chooses to live with us in love, Making our bodies his temple.

Verse 3: We are God's house of living stones, Built for his own habitation. He through baptismal grace us owns Heirs of his wondrous salvation. Were we but two his name to tell, Yet he would deign with us to dwell With all his grace and his favor.

Verse 4: Here stands the font before your eyes, Telling how God did receive us. Th' altar recalls Christ's sacrifice And what the sacrament gives us. Here sound the Scriptures that proclaim Christ yesterday, today, the same, And evermore, our Redeemer.

Verse 5: Grant then, O God, your will be done, That, when the church bells are ringing, Many in saving faith may come Where Christ his message is bringing: "I know my own; my own know me. You, not the world, my face shall see. My peace I leave with you always."

God’s Word to His People Matthew 16:13-20 Peter’s confession of Christ

Lord’s Prayer All: For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen

Pastor: Lord God, all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works come from you. Give to us, your servants, that peace which the world cannot give, that our hearts may be set to obey your commandments. Defend us also from the fear of our enemies that we may live in peace and quietness, through the merits of Jesus Christ our Savior, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen Prayer For Peace

Lord Jesus Christ, the Church's Head CW #536 Verses 1-4 Text: Johann Mentzer, 1658-1734 Setting: REUTER Tune: Friedrich O. Reuter, 1863-1924

Verse 1: Lord Jesus Christ, the Church's head, You are her one foundation. In you she trusts, before you bows, And waits for your salvation. Built on this rock secure, Your Church shall endure Though all the world decay And all things pass away. Oh, hear, oh, hear us, Jesus!

Verse 2: O Lord, let this your little flock, Your name alone confessing, Continue in your loving care, True unity possessing. Your sacraments, O Lord, And your saving Word To us e'er pure retain. Grant that they may remain Our only strength and comfort.

Verse 3: Help us to serve you evermore With hearts both pure and lowly. And may your Word, that light divine, Shine on in splendor holy That we repentance show, In faith ever grow. The pow'r of sin destroy And evils that annoy. Oh, make us faithful Christians.

Verse 4: And for your gospel let us dare To sacrifice all treasure; Teach us to bear your blessed cross, To find in you all pleasure. Oh, grant us steadfastness In joy and distress. Lord, for your mercy's sake, Let us by grace partake Of endless joy and glory.
