2. What is IBBY? “ The International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) is a non-profit organization which represents an international network of people from all over the world who are committed to bringing books and children together.”

3. Mission  to promote international understanding through children's books  to give children everywhere the opportunity to have access to books with high literary and artistic standards  to encourage the publication and distribution of quality children's books, especially in developing countries  to provide support and training for those involved with children and children's literature  to stimulate research and scholarly works in the field of children's literature

4. How it began… 1952- Jella Lepman (German journalist, author and translator) organized International Understanding through Children’s Book in Munich, Germany. This meeting gathered authors, publishers, teachers and philosophers. A committee was appointed to create the International Board on Books for Young People – IBBY. 1953- IBBY was registered as a non-profit organization in Zurich, Switzerland. The founding members included: Erich Kästner, Lisa Tetzner, Astrid Lindgren, Jo Tenfjord, Fritz Brunner, Bettina Hürlimann and Richard Bamberger.

5. Organization Members of the National Sections: Authors, illustrators, publishers, editors, translators, journalists, critics, teachers, university professors, students, librarians, booksellers, social workers and parents. Executive Committee: 10 people from different countries and a President, elected biennially by the National Sections at a General Assembly during the IBBY Congresses. National Sections - Receive all IBBY information (IBBY Newsletter, Press Releases, IBBY’s journal Bookbird: A Journal of International Children’s Literature). - Are entitled to vote in the IBBY Membership Assembly and has the right to nominate the serving IBBY Officers. - Have the exclusive right to nominate candidates for the Hans Christian Andersen Award, the IBBY-Asahi Reading Promotion Award and titles for the IBBY Honour List. Each section pays an annual membership due and must submit a biennial report of their activities. The IBBY Executive Committee decides on the amount of dues for each National Section upon the following criteria: the member country’s economic standing, its standard of living, its children’s book production and the country’s presence on the international book market.

9. Programs: IBBY Yamada Program Teams with 60 National Sections to help to produce and develop a book culture for children within regions with special needs and lack support. The Campaign includes the following projects: Books for Africa – Books from Africa Develop networking in Asia and in the Pacific Campaign for reading in Central America and the Caribbean Campaign for reading in the Arab speaking countries Keep national children’s literature alive!

10. Programs: IBBY Children in Crisis The purpose of IBBY Fund for Children in Crisis fund is to provide support for children whose lives have been disrupted through war, civil disorder or natural disaster.IBBY Fund for Children in Crisis Goals: - Therapeutic use of books and storytelling in the form of bibliotherapy. - Creation or replacement of collections of selected books that are appropriate to the situation.

11. Asahi Reading Promotion Award The Asahi Reading Promotion Award was established in 1986 during the IBBY Congress in Tokyo.Asahi Reading Promotion Award Sponsored by the Asahi Shimbun newspaper company. Presented biennially to two groups or institutions whose outstanding activities are judged to be making a lasting contribution to reading promotion programs for children and young people. Nominations are submitted by the National Sections of IBBY and may include projects from any part of the world. The jury consists of members of the IBBY Executive Committee.

12. Hans Christian Andersen Awards The Hans Christian Andersen Awards are presented biennially to a living author and illustrator whose complete works have made a lasting contribution to children's literature.Hans Christian Andersen Awards The Author's Award has been given since 1956 and the Illustrator's Award has been given since 1966. It is the highest international recognition given to an author and an illustrator of children's books. Nominations are made by the National Sections of IBBY and the recipients are selected by a distinguished international jury of children's literature specialists.

14. Congress IBBY's congress IBBY's congress is a biennial gathering of IBBY members and other people involved in children's books and reading development from all over the world to network and exchange ideas. Every two years a different National Section hosts the Congress. Several hundred people attend the lectures, panel discussions, seminar sessions and workshops on relevant congress themes. An IBBY Congress is also allotted time for the presentation of different exhibitions and awards such as the Hans Christian Andersen Awards and the IBBY Honour List. Congress 2012

IBBY Partnerships CODE: Canada's International Literacy Agency for Children “In developing countries, we support a network of partner organizations to design, deliver and evaluate quality literacy programs. We also engage Canadians to participate in education initiatives on global issues. International Children’s Digital Library “The mission of the International Children's Digital Library Foundation (ICDL Foundation) is to support the world's children in becoming effective members of the global community - who exhibit tolerance and respect for diverse cultures, languages and ideas -- by making the best in children's literature available online free of charge. Foundation Goals Collection - Create a collection of more than 10,000 books in at least 100 languages that is freely available to children, teachers, librarians, parents, and scholars throughout the world via the Internet. - Each collection should reflect similarities and differences in cultures, societies, interests, lifestyles, and priorities of peoples around the world. - Identify proper materials that help children to understand the world around them and the global society in which they live. It is hoped that through a greater understanding of one another that tolerance and acceptance can be achieved. Education - Build a stronger understanding of the relationship between children's access to a digital collection of multicultural materials and children's attitudes toward books, libraries, reading, technology, and other countries and cultures. Technology - Seek assistance from children worldwide in the design and development of computer interface technologies that support children in searching, browsing, reading, and sharing books in electronic form. Business - Develop a program that insures the Library’s growth in accordance with its strategic priorities and in a manner that supports its outstanding human and intellectual resources to achieve the Library's mission of reaching as many children as possible with the best of children's literature.

19. Fast Facts - The ICDL collection includes 4643 books in 61 languages. - ICDL users come from 228 different countries. - The ICDL has been visited by over 3 million people since it was developed in November, 2002.

Research International Research with Children International Research with Children Funded by the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the International Research with Children project works in four countries to explore how children perceive other cultures outside of their own and to describe the role of books, libraries, technology, and culture in children's lives. ICDL Communities ICDL Communities Funded by the NSF, the ICDL Communities research project works to enable communities of children to develop around the ICDL book collection by building tools that allow intercultural communication between children. Research Programs Research Programs Funded by a large number of concerned individuals and organizations, The International Children's Digital Library Foundation supports directly a number of research projects in Library Sciences, Computer Science and Education. This support provides the foundation upon which the Library has been built.
