Wind Energy: The Energy that Runs the World! Katie Kerwin, Maggie Malley, and Emily Nester 7B Group 7

Where do you find wind Energy? Wind energy is everywhere. Wind is caused by differences in air pressure. Wind is forever, so it is a renewable resource. Renewable resource- a natural resource that can be replaced at the same rate at which the resource is consumed. Wind- air in motion Wind energy is everywhere. Wind is caused by differences in air pressure. Wind is forever, so it is a renewable resource. Renewable resource- a natural resource that can be replaced at the same rate at which the resource is consumed. Wind- air in motion

Usages of Wind Energy It can power wind turbines that generate electricity to power nearby homes and business’. Wind turbine- a turbine having a large vaned wheel rotated by the wind to generate electricity. When the wind blows it turns the blades of the wind turbine, the blades spin a generator the produces electricity.

The equipment for a Wind Turbine Low speed axle Multiplier High-speed axle Generator Computer Brakes Cooling system Blades

Advantages 1. Wind is clean and easy 2. It doesn’t create air or water pollution 3. Wind will never run out as long as the sun keeps warming the land 4. It is one of the fastest growing types of alternative energy 5. wind is free and with modern technology it can be captured easily. 6. When the wind turbine is built the energy it produces, doesn’t cause greenhouse gases or other pollutants 7. They don’t take up a lot of space in the city. Greenhouse gas- a gas that contributes to the greenhouse affect by absourbing infrared radiation, e.g. carbon dioxide

Disadvantages 1. Wind can be powerful and destructive like a hurricane 2. Turbines can only produce power when the wind blows 3. Wind turbines are big they take up so much land and force wildlife away from their homes 4. The strength of the wind is not constant and it various from zero to storm force. This means that wind turbines do not produce the same amount of electricity all the time. 5. Win turbines are noisy. Each one can generate the same level of noise as a family car traveling at 70 mph. 6. Off shore wind farms are expensive to build. 7. Many people see large wind turbines as unsightly structures and not pleasant to look at.

Fun Facts! Wind turbine are deadly to birds that fly into the propellers although compared to the number of birds that die from turbines is puny compared to those that die from flying into windows! Clutters of wind turbines are called “wind farms” Scientists have built a few wind turbines in bodies of water to avoid harming the habitats of plants and land animals. One wind turbine can generate enough electricity to power 250 homes.

Wind Anything that moves is energy Wind turbines were introduced in 2006 Wind turbines can be built on bodies of water because its more windy In the past 10 years more people have turned to wind power Wind is a form of solar energy

Diagram of a wind turbine Rotor- a part that revolves in a stationary part. Pitch- distance advanced by a propeller in one revolution. Brake-a device for slowing up or stopping motion by friction. Gear box- a set of gears with with its casing in a motor vehicle. Generator- a thing that generates something in particular Controller- a person or thing the directs or regulates something Anemometer- an instrument for measuring the speed of wind Wind vane- a board blade attached to a rotating axis or wheel. Nacelle- a streamlined housing or tank for something on the outside of an engine Yaw drive- twist or oscillate about the vehicle axis. Yaw motor- one powered by electrical internal combustion. tower- a tall narrow building forming a part of a building.

Frequently Asked Questions What can wind power be useful for? This power can be used for generating electricity in homes and some office buildings. How is wind power easily renewed? It is easily renewed when the wind blows because the turbine’s propellers move and generate the electricity. What is the cost of using wind power? The cost of producing and transmitting electricity from wind turbines very widely depending on the control area involved. How is wind power gathered and/or created? Wind power is gathered by a wind turbine and is created by various factors. How is wind power stored or later used? How the wind energy is stored is by batteries, compressed air, and hydrogen.

More Frequently Asked Questions What are the waste by-products of wind power? The waste by-products are carbon dioxide, and various chemicals. Currently, what is keeping wind power from widespread use? Because wind only blows sometimes, and some people see wind turbines as ugly structures it isn’t a widely spread use of electricity.

Wind Farms Wind Farms – clusters of wind turbines Some examples of wind farms:

Test Your Knowledge What are some equipment that is used for wind power? What form of energy is wind? What are clusters of wind turbines? When were wind turbines introduced?
