1 Collective Nouns I can identify a collective noun and determine if it is singular or plural.

2 A collective noun is: A noun that names a GROUP of people or things
EX. team, family, cast, audience, group

3 Singular Collective Noun
The collective noun is singular when ALL members of the group are acting as ONE, SINGLE unit or group.

4 Examples of Singular Collective Nouns
The team shares the field with its opponent. The drama club meets after school. Our class watches the volleyball match.

5 Plural Collective Nouns
A collective noun is plural when the members of the group ACT SEPARATELY, or INDIVIDUALLY.

6 Examples of Plural Collective Nouns
The team share their jokes with each other. The club take their individual positions. The class begin their presentations.

7 Hints for Determining Plural Collective Nouns
The word “their” appears after the subject and verb. The verb does not have an “s” added to the end. The direct object is plural. The main verb or verb phrase contains “have,” “are,” or “were.”
