7 7 Setting the Stage for Community Visioning What community ideas have already been introduced? (Community Idea Bank) What community assets have already been identified? (Community Asset Bank) What are the key characteristics of our service population? (Our Child Population)

8 8 Community Visioning in Context Some working terms:  A community vision statement answers the question, “What will success for our community look like?”  An organizational mission statement answers the question, “How will our organization help make the community vision reality?”  A strategic goal statement answers the question, “What will our organization accomplish within our mission to help achieve the community vision?  An organizational vision statement answers the question: “What will success for our organization look like?”

9 9 Community Visioning in Context Why do we need a community vision statement?  To create a shared image of what we hope our community will accomplish  To create a shared sense of destiny  To focus our creativity and resources where they can do the most good  To help us identify who else needs to be included in our coalition  To helping us craft our mission and goals as a coalition aiming to help the community vision come true  To challenge and inspire us to achieve our mission and goals

10 10 Community Visioning in Context Community vision statements should be:  Focused on specific targets  Set in the future  Easily understood  Outcome-oriented  Inclusive  Ambitious  Realistic and credible

11 11 Community Vision Targets We can target our community vision toward children and the people, organizations, and institutions which influence them  Children  Families  Social networks Circle of friends, broader peer group, informal relationships with adults  Community partners Organizations & institutions Programs and policies Media

12 12 Community Vision Targets Examples of targeted vision statements (for tobacco):  We envision a community in which: All of our youth are tobacco free All of our community’s parents & caregivers promote tobacco avoidance for their children All of our community’s youth influence others not to smoke All of our community’s schools teach tobacco avoidance beginning in fourth grade

13 13 Community Vision Targets Examples of targeted vision statements (for tobacco):  We envision a community in which: All of our community health care providers deliver ant- tobacco counseling All of our community’s youth-serving organizations deliver anti-tobacco messages to youth All of our community’s tobacco vendors enforce tobacco age restrictions All of our local media outlets deliver anti-tobacco messages to our community’s youth

14 14 Constructing a Community Vision Statement Today:  Brainstorm community vision statements for children, families, social networks, community partners  Review preliminary results Before next meeting:  Staff will organize, categorize, and summarize vision statements and draft a consolidated vision statement for next meeting Next meeting:  Review, refine, adopt vision statement  Use vision statement as context for developing mission, values, goals of the coalition

15 15 Constructing a Community Vision Statement Today’s exercise: Brainstorming the Vision  Gather your own thoughts on essential changes needed to achieve the goal of 5-2-1-AN for every child in Western Sussex by 2010 Use the graphic on next slide to help trigger ideas Write a single vision statement on each card Write as many vision statements as you want, one per card Write each statement for a specific target (children, families, social networks, community partners) Place your cards at the edge of the table for pickup and posting by staff Be creative, ambitious, and specific
