2. What is Herpes? Herpes is an STD cause by two types of viruses
Herpes simplex type 1 virus- Causes sores around the mouth and lips (cold sores, fever blisters)
Herpes simplex type 2 virus- Causes sores around the genitals and rectum. May even cause sores in other areas below the waist.

3. How does Herpes spread?
HSV-1 is usually spread from person to person by kissing, or it could be spread from mouth to genitals during oral sex. This could turn into genital herpes(HSV-2)
HSV-2 is most commonly spread by vaginal sex and anal sex, or it could be passed from one person’s genitals to another person’s mouth. This results in oral herpes(HSV-1)
It can even spread if the person with the virus doesn't have symptoms or signs of infection.

4. Symptoms of Herpes
Many people who get the virus never see or experience any symptoms.
On the other hand, others may experience symtpoms a few days or weeks after initial contact.
Common symptoms:
Tingling, itching, burning before blister appears
Painful sores that are fluid filled and may break open. They can ooze and form a crust before healing.
Flu-like symptoms
Problems Urinating (genital herpes)
Eye infection (herpes keratitis)

HSV-2 Symptoms
Cracked, raw, or red areas around your genitals without pain, itching, or tingling
Itching or tingling around your genitals or your anal region
Small blisters that break open and cause painful sores.
Men- blisters may appear on penis, scrotum, anus, thighs, or buttocks
Women- blisters may appear on labia, vagina, cervix, anus, thighs, or buttocks
Swollen lymph nodes in the groin area
Flu-like symptoms
Back aches (mainly women)
Pain from urine passing over the sore(mainly women)
Genital Herpes can sometimes be mistaken for other conditions such as ingrown hairs, razor burn, vaginal yeast infections, bacterial infections, or bladder infections.

6. Diagnosis of Herpes
HSV-1is usually diagnosed with a physical exam and a swab culture of the sore.
HSV-2 is usually diagnosed with a physical exam and typically confirmed with a swab test or blood test.
Herpes is easier diagnosed when there are sores or blisters that are recently present on the affected areas.

7. Treatment of Herpes
There is no cure for herpes, but there are medications that can prevent or shorten outbreaks.
Valacyclovir is a medication that can be taken daily that makes it less likely to pass on the infection to your sex partner(s).
Famvir, Zovirax, and Valtrex are the medications that treat the symptoms of herpes.

8. Prevention Of Herpes Use a condom Limit the number of sex partners
Use a dental dam for oral sex
Get tested with your partner at the same time
Avoid sexual contact
Avoid sexual contact if you have present symptoms
Avoid sexual contact with someone who has present symtpoms
Take antiviral medicine if already diagnosed with herpes

9. Damage to Reproductive System
Herpes does not damage the reproductive system in both males and females.
But when a women has herpes and is pregnant, doctors may recommend a C-section to ensure that the virus does not get passed on to the baby during delivery.
Genital herpes has no effect on fertility and is not transmitted from men’s sperm or women’s eggs.

11. Facts about Genital Herpes
People with genital herpes are at twice the risk of being infected with HIV if exposed to it than those without it.
As many as one in three adults has the virus that causes genital herpes.
Around 80% of people infected with genital herpes don't know they have the virus because they have very mild symptoms or none at all.
Over 50% of people who have genital herpes get it from people who are entirely unaware that they have herpes themselves.
Daily medication can prevent recurrences of the herpes virus  and reduce the risk of transmission to partners
