Media Communications Level 6 Case Study Questioning / Questionnaires

Questionnaire do’s and don’ts Don’t ask more than one question within a question, eg do you read a daily newspaper and a weekly magazine? Do you use social media to find out about current developments in your industry and to network with peers? It is not clear what the respondent has answered yes to Don’t ask too many questions – Survey Monkey offers a free template with 10 questions You can use a mix of open and closed questions Blaxter, L, Hughes, C, and Tight, M. (2011), How to Research,. 4 th edition. Maidenhead: Open University Press

Questionnaire do’s and don’ts Do ensure you ask the necessary questions to establish the demographic of your respondents, eg male/female, age, job Don’t be frightened to politely chase up a response – sometimes people need a reminder If you can get as many respondents as possible to fill in a survey on the spot you are going to get a better response rate Avoid leading questions, eg social media is a poor communications tool as it can cause great damage to a company’s reputation. Do you agree?

Questionnaire do’s and don’ts Think about piloting your survey, ie asking a friend to look at it Are the questions clear or could they be misconstrued? Use clear wording and avoid jargon People are more inclined not to fill in responses to open questions. Imaginative questions may help encourage them here Types of questions – scale, ranking, attitude, multiple choice, quantity, grid or table, open ended Sensitive questions at the end

Questionnaire do’s and don’ts Think about your layout – keep it clear and appealing to read Make sure you explain why you are conducting this survey Assure confidentiality if the subject matter is sensitive Is it anonymous? Constant response, ie ticking/circling Don’t forget to thank your respondents for their precious time

Questionnaire do’s and don’ts Time how long it takes to fill in Have I included all possible options in my responses? eg What do you think about the following statement? Wrexham has a wide range of good quality restaurants in which to eat out. Strongly agree/agree/no strong opinion/disagree/strongly disagree
