Languages and Tourism Introduction During this project we developed and piloted a languages & enterprise activity template which we hope you will find useful and easy to use with your own pupils. We’ve used tourism as the theme for this activity. We selected a local attraction and developed a student project around it. The three partner schools piloted the project with their Year 9 pupils. We aimed to create a flexible model, easily adaptable to the needs of each partner school. This applied to the languages used, the end product for the student project, and also the method chosen to engage pupils to pilot the project. Some class time was used to introduce the project and to complete the evaluation questionnaires. Extra curricular time was used for pupils to carry out the project, with teacher support. In one school Year 10 pupils provided some mentoring on project management. This presentation gives an overview of our whole project.

Languages and Tourism Student questionnaire In order to pilot the project more successfully, school partners invited pupils to volunteer. This meant pupils involved were already aware of the importance of languages but they’d had little or no exposure to language related enterprise activity. Before student activity started, we wanted pupils’ views about the relevance of languages in tourism and whether they felt the project would help them understand the application of languages in the world of work. Most students involved revealed a good awareness and indicated considering taking a language at key stage 4. Question 7 is also included in Questionnaire 2, completed once pupils had finished project activity. www.pdclipart.org

Languages and Tourism Student brief Students were given a brief explaining the project and the specific task they had to achieve: producing a promotional flyer in French, or producing a TV advert in Spanish, or producing a radio advert in German; As each partner school worked with a different language & media, the student brief for each school reflected that. The project was broadly the same – to develop a promotional tool for the Cathedral, but the language detail and the actual end tool were different. The example illustrates one of the languages. The brief included a check list of suggested actions for planning and executing the project. To help pupils manage the project, an Action Plan template was provided so each team could log project activity and monitor progress. www.photorack.net

Languages and Tourism Pupils were encouraged to use the Action Plan template below to plan and log their work, as shown in this example used by pupils at St Hilda’s CE High School. In this school, Year 10 pupils acted as mentors, giving advice on good project management. They used their own experience from a languages & enterprise activity in the previous year.

Both in the way they planned it and executed it, and in the way they managed it. They could develop their own project management tools to plan and log their work, and to monitor progress, instead of using the Action Plan template provided. This is illustrated here in one of the documents produced by pupils at St Margaret’s CE High School. It is an excellent example of the thinking behind the creative process which is evident in the work produced by pupils in all three partner schools.

Languages and Tourism At the end of the project, pupils were asked to complete the questionnaire sampled here. They were asked If the project illustrated the application of languages in the world of work; Which skills they believed they had learnt during the project; Which aspects of the project they enjoyed most; Which aspects they least enjoyed; If they would be interested in similar projects in the future. The questions were purposely open-ended in order to capture individual feedback from pupils. A multiple choice question could, in this case, influence their answers, particularly in identifying the skills learnt during the project. Image: www.pdclipart.org

Languages and Tourism During this project pupils practised and improved their language skills and their cultural knowledge. This included reading, writing, speaking and listening skills They also used and developed other skills listed below, which were identified by pupils when responding to questionnaire 2 and in the evaluation interviews. IT Skills, team work, how to conduct a survey, data analysis, research, project management, creating an advert/flyer, skills relating to filming, sound recording, editing, desktop publishing and presentation skills Other knowledge was acquired owing to the cross-curricular nature of the tasks carried out. This involved art & design, media, research into persuasive techniques to develop the right message and research into music styles and tastes to use as background to adverts. We’ve included some pupils’ comments in the next slide. Image: www.openclipart.org

Languages and Tourism Teacher questionnaire This was completed at the end of the project to assess: any benefits gained; any rewarding and challenging aspects; whether the project had influenced their future teaching; whether they would recommend this type of activity to other language teachers. Some challenges were faced, and we explain more these in the project report, but overall the feedback was extremely positive. All teachers reported clear benefits from involvement in the project, and would recommend this type of activity to other language teachers. Some of their feedback has been included in the next slide.

16 © Crown copyright 2011, Department for Education. This resource has been created through the LinkedUp Award Scheme. Languages and Tourism Given the employer engagement theme, a workshop was devised for teachers to work with Business Language Champions. With facilitation by a professional business speaker and communication skills trainer, teachers will gain a perspective of business people and they will explore ways to engage with the business community through effective networking and communication. This workshop will involve school partners from both employer engagement projects led by RLN NW – the Languages & Tourism project and the Languages & Export project. Although there are similarities in both projects, they were developed and piloted very differently and so the experiences of both sets of teachers will form a useful basis for exchange during this workshop.

17 © Crown copyright 2011, Department for Education. This resource has been created through the LinkedUp Award Scheme. Languages and Tourism This workshop takes place just outside the live period of the project, and so it should provide the opportunity to reflect on the various aspects of the project. It is important that this reflection also happens outside teachers’ normal working environment as it will provide the next step to continue on the employer engagement journey. On the day, teachers will meet colleagues from partner schools who worked in same project; meet colleagues from other schools who worked in other projects; meet Business Language Champions and engage with them; work in a business environment; gain exposure to tried and tested communication techniques designed to help people influence and engage others.
