200814 Regular Subsidy From 2006 on: Single chapters can receive up to $2000 every year, in support of chapters activities. Joint chapters can ask for $1000 subsidy Deadline is 1 st of September For more information, see: sscs.org/Chapters/subsidy.htm

200715 Extra Subsidies Extra subsidies up to $5,000 are available: to support events such as workshops and mini-conferences that are not financed by the annual Chapter Subsidy Application Procedure: 1 page description Itemized budget Other sources of support Prepare press release for the SSCS Magazine Follow-up: 1 page description of the actual event Itemized actual expenses Provide Photographs Write short description for the SSCS Magazine

Revised Extra Chapter Subsidy Guidelines Basic Principle: Biannual Windows To enable the Subsidy Committee to compare requests before approving or disapproving them, chapters may only apply for an Extra Subsidy during two application "windows" per year: · April 1– May 1 · October 1 – November 1 Extra chapter subsidies must be submitted separately of regular, annual chapter maintenance subsidy applications. Principle #2: "Triage" If the applications within each biannual window overrun half of the Society’s annual extra subsidy budget, preference will be given to chapters that did not receive funding the previous year, or received less than $5K. In other words, chapters may be restricted to $5K over a two year period, depending upon the volume of requests. 200816

200744 Hajime Ishikawa, Chair of the Japan Chapter, said, Japan has hosted a lot of unique activities. They have co-organized three conferences, initiated a new student award, and had very strong membership growth. Their seminar on Wireless and Mobile Access was particularly successful." The seminar featured Professor Paul Grey of UC Berkeley, who spoke on "Recent progress in ICs for wireless communications," and Dr. Masahiro Morikura of NTT, whose talk was "System aspect and service concept of multimedia mobile access communications." The Japan Chapter also organized a valuable review meeting of ISSCC 2000. The goal of this meeting was to help bring the essence of the conference to Society members who could not attend. The review meeting consisted of 12 selected papers from ISSCC and two lectures. The ISSCC Far East Committee Chairman, Dr. Youichi Unno, presented a conference overview along with some of the remarkable achievements and technology trends presented at the conference this year. In addition to the ISSCC Review Meeting, the Japan Chapter cosponsored the Asia-Pacific Conference on ASIC (AP-ASIC), Seoul, Korea, in August 1999. This was the first conference to promote ASIC design research and development activities in the Asia- Pacific region. The Chapter also cosponsored the VDEC LSI Designers Forum in September 1999 and the 3rd System LSI Biwalo Workshop in November 1999, which attracted more than 300 participants. Japan Chapter Selected as First Recipient of SSCS Outstanding Chapter Award – 2000

Educational Support ISSCC-SSCS Pilot DVD Offer With attendance approaching capacity at the San Francisco Marriott, ISSCC executive committee has launched a program to virtualize the conference. To test the effectiveness of electronic presentations, SSCS chapter chairs were invited to select one of three ISSCC-2007 DVD’s strictly for use at chapter meetings: 2007 Tutorials DVD - presentation visuals with audio and transcriptions for 10, 90-minute presentations. (selected by 15 chapters) 2007 Short Course DVD - presentation visuals with audio, transcriptions and PDFs of selected references for 4 subtopics of the short course, each 90 minutes long. " Analog, Mixed Signal and RF Circuit Design in Nanometer CMOS” (selected by 17 chapters) 2007 Selected Sessions DVD – 11 sessions, each 1 ½ hours. (selected by 3 chapters) Questionnaires for chairs and attendees about the meetings at which these materials are used will help ISSCC and the Society develop successful products. 200850

Preliminary Feedback on the Pilot DVDs 19 responded: 7 had scheduled an event Tutorial: 4 respondents (Atlanta, Dallas, Tainan,Taipei) Short Course: 2 (Seoul and Belarus) Sessions: 1(Nizhny) The chapter chair and the attendants were asked to evaluate the DVDs (Usefulness and Future Interest) 200851

Future Interest score is based on the Chapter chair’s estimate of future usefulness for a chapter event (even if he had not seen the DVD)

Feedback from chapters Tutorial: “I did not screen the presentation and did not realize that the speaker was not filmed and that his presentation was monotone, not really engaging the audience and losing them soon. Afternoon showing not the best time for assimilating new material.” Short course: two chapters showed the short course DVD. One prepared a 10 minutes summary on the subject and provided specialist to for Q&A afterwards. 200853

New Chapters Initiatives in Asia Will host the ISSCC Satellite conferences in 2009: Selected sessions tailored to regional interest: 1 day events, 6 regular plus plenary sessions Date: March timeframe Locations: Japan – Tokyo Taiwan – Taipei Korea – Seoul (KAIST) China - For more information: see report of CK Wang and Kawahara-san 200854
