3 N20000 Professional Nursing Issues Topics covered:  Ethical issues in nursing  APA writing format  How to properly write a formal paper  Nursing theorists

4 N20030 Foundations of Nursing Intervention Competencies: Safe administration of medications, interpersonal process recording, oral/subcutaneous/intramuscular medications, activities of daily living, and understanding which interventions are appropriate for different situations. Patient Teaching: Medication side effects and reason for taking the given medications and how to properly do a dressing change with post-op adult patients. Evidence Based Practice: The abdomen SQ site is the best site for insulin because it’s absorbed the quickest. Personal Reflection of this Experience: My first clinical was for this course at Mercy Hospital. I got to work hands on and apply the information I learned during lecture.

5 Junior Experience Goals:  Competent IV medication administration  IV assessment, prevent complications related to IV’s  Provide competent care for adult and geriatric patients

6 N30010 Parent and Newborn Nursing Competencies: Head to toe assessment on mom and newborn, prevent complications related to postpartum, and computerized charting. Patient Teaching: Teach mom how to provide activities of daily living for the baby and explain to mom what to expect with postpartum. Evidence Based Practice: Signs and symptoms of pregnancy complications. Personal Reflection of this Experience: This clinical was at Aultman Hospital. I got to care for two patients at once for the first time and I became more comfortable caring for babies.

7 N30020 Healthcare of Children Competencies: Provide care for children, calculate safe medication dosages for children, and therapeutically communicate/interact with children. Patient Teaching: The importance of carbohydrate counting and how to properly use an insulin pump to a school age child. Evidence Based Practice: Symptoms and treatment of pneumonia in children. Personal Reflection of this Experience: This clinical was also at Aultman Hospital. I learned how to therapeutically talk to children and became more comfortable working with children.

8 N30030 Nursing of Adults Competencies: Take on two patients per clinical, provide care for patients with more advanced illnesses, safely perform blood transfusion, lab work interpretation, IV therapy, NG tubes, and tube feeds. Patient Teaching: Warning signs of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia, discharge teaching Evidence Based Practice: Safe administration of Heparin Personal Reflection of this Experience: This clinical experience was at Mercy Medical Center. During this clinical experience I became more confident in myself and what I was doing.

9 N30040 Nursing of Adults and Rehab Needs &/or Gerontologic Changes Competencies: Provide care and assessment for the elderly, recognize health changes in the elderly, trachea care, PEG tubes, how to properly treat pressure ulcers, and catheter insertion. Patient Teaching: Fall prevention Evidence Based Practice: Symptoms of a urinary infection in the elderly. Personal Reflection of this Experience: This clinical experience was at the Hanover House. I developed a better understanding of the elderly as far as how to care for them and how the symptoms ofcertain illnesses differs with that age group.

11 N40010 Nursing of the Critically Ill Competencies: Provide safe care for PT’s with a higher acuity than previous courses and how to ensure that life sustaining equipment is working properly. Patient Teaching: Non-pharmacological pain management Evidence Based Practice: The importance of oral care for intubated patients in the prevention of ventilator assisted pneumonia. Personal Reflection of this Experience: My clinical experience was at Mercy Medical Center. This experience taught me a lot about how to use life sustaining equipment and how to manage an emergency situation.

12 N40020 Community Health Nursing Competencies: Understand the illnesses and problems affecting people in the community, be aware of resources offered in the community, care for people in the community Patient Teaching: Resources available in the community to help individuals with limited incomes. Evidence Based Practice: Resources available for people in the community without healthcare insurance and the amount of people in the community without healthcare insurance. Personal Reflection of this Experience: During my clinical experience I went to various places in the community that I live in to learn how to properly care and become aware of resources available for those ill in the community as well as urban and rural communities.

13 N40030 Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing Care Competencies: Therapeutically communicate with the mentally ill and recognize how to de-escalate an escalated patient Patient Teaching: Relaxation techniques and when to ask for medications. Evidence Based Practice: Symptoms and prevention of Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome. Personal Reflection of this Experience: This clinical experience was at Heartland Behavioral Healthcare. I learned what different variables cause a person to be mentally ill and how to be comfortable talking to someone with a mental illness.

14 N40045 Integration of Leadership and Management in Nursing Competencies: Develop skills necessary to be a leader, be able to differentiate between a leader and a manager, and delegate tasks appropriately, provide care for up to four PT’s, time management skills and the importance of prioritization. Patient Teaching: Importance of ambulation after surgery. Evidence Based Practice: The use of Aspirin over Lovenox for post-op patients in preventing blood clots. Personal Reflection of this Experience: My clinical experience was at Affinity Hospital on a Med-Surg unit with a preceptor. I learned what it’s really like to be a nurse by independently providing care for numerous PT’s and taking on more responsibilities for more PT’s compared to previous courses.
