UNIT EIGHT– Global Interdependence 1960-2012 WORLD HISTORY

UNIT 8, LESSON 1 Goals for the rest of the semester Work Packets Introduction to “Global Interdependence” Lecture – “Impact of Science & Technology” Note Check & Summary HW: Guided Reading Worksheet, Section 1

GLOBAL INTERDEPENDECE – UNIT 8 Thoughts?? Images?? Pros/Cons??

Impact of Science & Technology Skipping WAY ahead… Exploring the Solar System Competition between the US & the Soviet Union,1950s-60s Cooperation between the U.S. & the Soviets, 1970s-80s International Space Station, 1998-2012 Sponsored by the US, Russia, and 14 other countries Assembled in space Football field size Permanent crew of 6 Why cooperation? Exploration Unmanned probes Mars Hubble Space telescope

Impact of Science & Technology Expanding Global Communications Events in one part of the globe are witnessed by people far away Small, powerful computers 1940s – original computers took up a whole room Circuitry has been miniaturized, partly due to fit into space capsules Silicon chips replaced big vaccum tubes Communication networks 1990s – the internet emerges Began in the 1960s as linkage for scientists to share info and research 1995 – 26 million users 2012 – 2.2 billion users How has this changed how people work??

Impact of Science & Technology Technology Transforms Human Life? Health and Medicine Medical imaging (CAT scans and MRIs) leads to better diagnoses Genetic engineering – scientists can introduce new genes into an organism to give it new traits Cloning – the creation of identical copies of DNA, used to create new reproductions of existing plants and animals Applications – agriculture, pharmaceuticals

Impact of Science & Technology Molecular Medicine 2003 – Human Genome Project completed Map of the thousands of genes contained in DNA Helpful to develop “molecular medicine,” which works to cure and to detect genetic diseases Gene therapy – replacing a patient’s diseased genes with normal ones International effort One of the largest investigative projects in the history of science.

Impact of Science & Technology The Green Revolution Attempt to increase food production worldwide Began in the 1960s Promoted use of fertilizers, pesticides, and disease-resistant crops Negative side: Fertilizers and pesticides may cause cancer or pollute Cost of chemicals and equipment is too high for normal farmers Farmers pushed off land by large agricultural businesses *** Changes resulting from technology: what people produce, how people work, how economies work, how people communicate ***

Impact of Science & Technology NOW: Note check Summarize the most important information in your own words at the bottom with at least two sentences.

UNIT 8, LESSON 2 Do Now HW Review Free Write HW: Find a current event article related to “The Impact of Science and Technology.” Complete the first worksheet of the current events packet.

Do Now 1. How does the development of the ISS show that space exploration has become a cooperative endeavor? 2. How has the development of the computer, internet, and smart phones changed the way people work? 3. What areas of medicine have benefited from scientific and technological developments?

Free Write Have technological changes in the past 20 years (personal computers, internet, smart phones, genetic engineering, space exploration) improved lives around the world or made things worse? What are possible costs and benefits of technology?

UNIT 8, LESSON 3 Do Now Lecture – Global Economic Development Note Check & Summary HW: Binder check, Guided Reading Worksheet – Section 2

Do Now Explain.

Do Now Kenya’ GDP: $32 billion Amazon.com Revenue: $34.2 billion Amazon – world’s 86 th biggest country Source: Fortune/CNN Money Explain.

Global Economic Development Technology Revolutionizes the Economy Explosion in scientific knowledge prompts growth in industry after World War II Information industries emerge Lower need for factory workers Greater need for “knowledge workers” – finance, insurance, research, communications, law, etc. Effects of New Economies Manufacturing jobs leave developed nations Emerging nations – those in the process of industrializing Why???

Global Economic Development Globalization – the process of spreading economies and cultures worldwide Global economy – all financial interactions that cross borders Globalization grows since the 1940s – why? Better communication Cheap transportation Rise of multinational corporations (Exxon Mobil, Ford, BP, Toyota, etc.) Expanding free trade Free trade – elimination of trade barriers/opening markets to trade Major goal of globalization Organizations promote the reduction of tariffs WTO – World Trade Organization EEC – European Economic Community EU – European Union NAFTA – North American Free Trade Agreemetn

Global Economic Development Globalization – for… Increase in standard of living everywhere Promotes peace through trade Creates jobs in emerging nations Sense of world community Globalization – against… Developed nations benefit more Creates conflict because it is unfair Takes jobs from developed countries Erodes local cultures

Global Economic Development Impact of Global Development Political Impacts Manufacturing and transport requires energy (oil) Countries that have oil have special power over countries that need oil 1991 – Persian Gulf War – Iraq invades Kuwait to seize oil fields Environmental Impacts Burning of coal and oil releases carbon dioxide Pollution & global warming Ozone Layer – damaged by release of chemicals called CFCs, increase in skin cancer Soil erosion – result of damaging farming techniques Large-scale extinctions

Global Economic Development Sustainable Growth Economists and scientists look for ways to reduce the negative effect that global development has on the environment Can growth occur without damaging air, water, and land? Goal of sustainable growth Meet current economic needs while also preserving the environment

Global Economic Development NOW: Note check Summarize the most important information in your own words at the bottom with at least two sentences.

UNIT 8, LESSON 4 Do Now/Binder Check Binder must have: 1. Unit 8 Work Packet 2. Current Events Assignment 3. Notes from last class (global economic development) Independent Work: Reteaching Activity, Section 2 Main Ideas Questions, Section 2 HW: Study for quiz

Do Now Binder Check: Unit 8 Work Packet, Current Events Assignment, Notes from last class (global economic development) Define these terms: Developed nation Emerging nation Global economy Free trade Ozone Layer Sustainable growth

MAIN IDEAS Why are “knowledge workers” becoming more important in the developed nations? What is free trade and what are some groups that promote it? How has global economic development affected the environment?

UNIT 8, LESSON 5 Take Quiz (25 Minutes) “Different Perspectives”, Page 1081 HW: Current Events

Unit 8, Lesson 6 Do Now: Share your Current Event Lecture: Global Security Issues Note Check & Summary Quizzes Back – Questions? HW: Quiz corrections

Global Security Issues Issues of War & Peace Cold War – state of hostility between the US and the Soviet Union (Russia) for 47 years following WWII Global Organizations NATO – North Atlantic Treaty Organization Warsaw Pact – Russia and its partners UN – United Nations Peacekeeping organization

Global Security Issues Issues of War & Peace Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDs) Examples: nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons Nations work to limit their production (proliferation) and use 1968 – Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty War in Iraq 1991 – Persian Gulf War 2002 – UN suspects that Iraq is developing WMDs 2003 – American troops invade Iraq, Hussein’s government falls in 4 weeks

Global Security Issues Issues of War & Peace Ethnic & Religions Conflicts Tend to be 1. old and 2. violent Protestants v. Catholics in Ireland Palestinians v. Israelis in Middle East Persecution of the Kurds in Turkey, Iran, and Iraq Human Rights Issues 1948 – Universal Declaration of Human Rights Human Rights Violations Gov’ts try to stop political dissent Ethnic or racial hatred leads to genocides 1994 - Rwanda

Global Security Issues Women’s Status Improves 1970s – increased awareness of human rights alllows women around the world to improve their lives Gains in education, work, income, freedom from abuse Just the same, gender inequality still exists Health Issues AIDS Attacks immune system 25 million people killed since early 1980s Sub-Saharan Africa suffers the most

Global Security Issues Population Movement Push-Pull Factors “Pushed” out of homeland – lack of food, natural disasters, political oppression. Refugees – 19 million in 2005 “Pulled” out of homeland – hope for a better life, higher income, family connections Effects of Migration Many countries do not want to accept immigrants Refugees with no place to go end up in crowded camps and face an uncertain future Positive – offset labor shortages, bring in new elements of culture

Global Security Issues NOW: Note check Summarize the most important information in your own words at the bottom with at least two sentences.
