1 APICS Foundation Update Great Lakes District Meeting May 18, 2013

2 The Case for the APICS Foundation Today, APICS is a perceived as a strong standards organization, but stakeholders want to see APICS take more a of a supply chain thought leadership role. By providing thought leadership, APICS will also be more effective in elevating the profession. The Foundation provides APICS with the means to enhance the brand and create opportunity for the market to see APICS as a source of innovation.

3 In addition, the Foundation facilitates APICS ability to better connect with the academic community by: working in concert with academia engaging in major academic research connecting academics to a worldwide network of practitioners The Case for the APICS Foundation

4 Effective January 1, 2013, the Foundation became a part of the APICS corporate structure. The Foundation budget and leaders are approved by the APICS Board. The Foundation will continue to be a maintain its separate 501(c) 3 status. APICS will support the Foundation by providing staff resources for its programs and services. APICS Foundation Integration

5 APICS programs aligned with the Foundation’s mission will be transferred to the Foundation. These include: Educational conferences Education courseware not related to certification Research and reference publications Industry and practitioner research Academic programs such as case competitions, students’ programs, etc. Key Foundation Responsibilities

8 APICS and Michigan State University in Partnership SCM: Beyond the Horizon Firms and the supply chains they operate are becoming more dynamic and turbulent. In response, firms are seeking to transform their strategies to create and maintain competitive advantages in this new world. Creating a strategic supply chain requires a new approach to working with their supply chains – an approach that is both integrative and agile.

9 This two-year study will explore how firms are trying to convert their supply chains from being strategically decoupled, price-driven to strategically coupled, value- driven. Focus will be on the business model rather than strategy since this defines the firm’s methods for doing business. APICS and Michigan State University in Partnership SCM: Beyond the Horizon

10 Key Questions: What makes a supply chain strategic? What specific traits are associated with a strategic supply chain? What is the impact on performance of having a strategic supply chain (relative to a tactical supply chain)? What measures and metrics have been developed that are particularly relevant to strategic supply chains? How do the various supply chain capabilities affect the ability of the firm to achieve its strategic outcomes?
