4 There is remarkable consensus among educators and business and policy leaders on one key conclusion: we need to bring what we teach and how we teach into the 21st century. TIME Magazine, December 18, 2006

5 developed by Peg Henson/SDDOE Why Standards? NCLB –Title II-D, Part 2 (formula/competitive) NCLB –Title II-D, Part 2 (formula/competitive) The primary goal of the Ed Tech program is to improve student academic achievement through the use of technology in elementary and secondary schools. It is also designed to assist every student – regardless of race, ethnicity, income, geographical location, or disability – in becoming technologically literate by the end of eighth grade, and to encourage the effective integration of technology resources and systems with professional development and curriculum development to promote research-based instructional methods that can be widely replicated.

6 developed by Peg Henson/SDDOE South Dakota is a partner: South Dakota is a partner: People in the 21 st century live in a technology and media-suffused environment, marked by access to an abundance of information, rapid changes in technology tools, and the ability to collaborate and make individual contributions on an unprecedented scale. To be effective in the 21 st century, citizens and workers must be able to exhibit a range of functional and critical thinking skills related to information, media and technology. 7 developed by Peg Henson/SDDOE Standards are the Destination! standards Curriculum is the Journey! Estimated time of the journey is equal to 1 year per grade level

8 developed by Peg Henson/SDDOE Standards are the destination! standards So, in this map, Pierre represents the designation (the standards) School B School D School A School C And the connecting lines represents the journey (curriculum) to get there. Each classroom starts & travels a different path depending on their distance from the standards Curriculum Resources
