Can we prevent the students from drifting info cyberspace??? DIDACTICAL THOUGHTS ON THE USE OF NAVIGATOR, JANUS LYLLOFF, MULERNES LEGATSKOLE, DENMARK

A typical Danish highscool ("gymnasium") Every student bring a laptop Smartboards in all classrooms Online Learning platform(s) E/I books (and p-books ) Open WIFI

OPEN WIFI????? OPEN AND FAST WIFI….

Why this setup? A national plan A dictate from the ministry of education The use of computers, net and web 2.0 is written into the curriculum of every subject in highschool. The exams are to be online in near future (~2018). A local plan The principal of the school emphazices this in the plan for the The didactical point (math) Didactical argument (math) CAS a part of curriculum for many years (business as usual) CAS and web 2.0 are powerfull in the understanding of (abstract) mathematical concepts

The digital pitfalls Inspired by Karsten Gynther: Didaktik 2.0 The students are not IT-natives: Need more help than you would think (scaffolding). Few tools => less problems The students are left alone: Students or “machines” will do the teaching. Easily distraction: The temptations of the net….

“Didactical loops" Inspired by Karsten Gynther: Didaktik 2.0 Lots of loops (~sequences) and many (short) tests Communicational loops (formidlingsloop): Specific knowledge, skills, introduction, organizatorical messages or… Evaluational loops (evalueringsloop): Evaluation of the students progress (individual or grouped). → Supervision needed? (supervison loop/communicational loop) Send to class

Formative tests – often and informal The goal of formative testing: Students: Am I working in a fruitful way? Teacher: Fine tuning of the plan and grading.

- Supervision - Communication - “Go on” Evaluation Schematic Student work Test Communication Startup

- Supervision - Communication - “Go on” Presentation of work so far Schematic Student work Test Presents the Problem/knowledge/ skill Startup

- Supervision - Communication - “Go on” Quick poll / presenter Schematic Student work SEND/RECIEVE Maybe send to class Startup

Using Navigator is An easy way to… - Monitor the students progress - Adjust the plan to the students - Keep the student on the right track

The daily use of navigator IN MY CLASSROOM

Capture class WHEN Introducing new techniques Monitoring their activities during class Check for cheating during tests WHY? Monitor progress – “are you teaching too fast?” Minimize the time wasted on the net. “I don’t expect the students to have irrelevant content on the screen during a math lecture”

Send to class WHEN After presenting a specific technique Sharing specific activities (exercises, animations for conceptual understanding…) Sharing collected data from real world exploartion (probes) or quick poll data collection WHY?? Effective way of sharing documents. No waste of time logging in to learning platforms. No temptation of the net. Send to class

Presentation WHEN AND WHY? Beginning of lecture – homework → Easy and fast way to present the students work. During lecture → Show the good idea or general problems → Easy integration of student on whiteboard Microsoft OneNote on Smartboard Exercise from electronic textbook Screenshot from student’s presentation Handwritten comments

Quick poll (and test) as loop WHEN AND WHY? Check if a certain concept is understood Conceptual understanding Check if a certain skill is achieved? Do a simple excersise/calculation => Adjust the teaching to the outcome

Test, portfolio, assessment – as summative tests

Use Nspire everyday Use Navigator some days NAVIGATOR EVERYDAY IN THE PERFECT WORLD… …TECHNICAL ISSUES

Hands on LAPTOPS ARE AVAILABLE

Navigator as professional develop Teacher to teacher NAVIGATOR IS…. … Met with sceptisism (Network setting is difficult. Student laptop setting is difficult) … An easy way to change your teachind (Once the technical issues are solved. Most teachers need one hour of training) … The hidden product (Not many in DK knows about it)

What we did in Denmark Write our own "getting started" manual. Write a technical manual for technical staff. Getting started screencasts. Showcase every time we have a workshop.

What I tell people who want to start up with NAVIGATOR Team up with a college. Check the network setting by trying to log-on. Remember to be at the same net as the students. Lower your expectations Start up with a few log-ons a criteria of success. Students as resources They know how to adjust firewall etc.

Can we prevent the students from drifting info cyberspace??? DIDACTICAL THOUGHTS ON THE USE OF NAVIGATOR, JANUS LYLLOFF, MULERNES LEGATSKOLE, DENMARK YES! In Math it is easy [and fun]
