1 St Aloysius Catholic Junior School Reading Project 2011-13

2 Waterstone’s Book Visit oChildren really enjoyed this – chose own books for Reading Ambassadors and Book Club. oReal sense of ownership over their book choice – checked by teacher. oAware of locality of a good children’s book shop. oTwo parents attended to promote importance of visiting book shops with children. oPlan to go again in Year 6.

3 Reading Ambassadors oSuccessful at boosting confidence of certain children – put them in charge of reading. oDeveloping reading with expression. oUnderstood the purpose of a book is to bring enjoyment and engagement – can see instant feedback with nursery children. oEstablished closer links with nursery with aim to develop in Year 6.

4 Targeted Book Club oChildren discussed book outside of class with peers. oSense of exclusivity, reading is valued/special. oForum led by children, chance to discuss their enjoyment rather than focus on reading skills. oConcern over children’s book choice not being suitable for every reader’s ability.

6 Success Criteria oBy end of year: o80% of children had made at least two N.C. sub levels progress. o53% of children made at least three N.C. sub levels progress. oBut children’s enjoyment of reading at centre of project. oVideo link here

7 Next Steps for Year 6 oParent Conversations about reading with child. oCamden Library Membership. oSecond visit to Waterstone’s to choose new set of books. oAsk the children for suggestions too.
