A Self-care Program Drill Sergeant Brief Soldier Health Maintenance
Objective Define and delineate your role as a facilitator for soldiers who use the Self-care Program. –Review and use the Soldier Health Maintenance Manual (SHMM) –Identify and review the self-care process –Review sample green sheet used for OTC medications –Review yellow sheets (used for evaluation)
What is Self-care ? Self-care: Helps soldiers decide what to do for a minor health symptom. Helps soldiers decide when to see a health care provider for a minor health symptom. Tells soldiers how to take care of themselves. Saves training time.
How Does the Self-care Program Work? Attend a formal class. Use the Soldier Health Maintenance Manual. Identify and evaluate symptoms. Choose a type of care based on the symptom evaluation. Follow the self-care process. Use over-the-counter (OTC), non-prescription medications with a green sheet.
Manage Minor Illness With Self-care Read and use the self-care measures in manual. Use common non-medication or home remedies. Use available over-the-counter (OTC) medications listed on the green sheet. See a health care provider if symptoms show no improvement or have other symptoms.
