GDT1.2 WEEK 11 - LECTURE STUDENT FEEDBACK re Project 2  Please collect your student feedback sheets and marks from Rosie - the GD admin officer in 7C39.  If you have any queries re your mark please email me on: aphays@iprimus.com.au.aphays@iprimus.com.au.  In response I may have to forward your query onto Anita Fitton the Unit Coordinator.

GDT1.2 WEEK 11 > LECTURE INDESIGN Project 3 Update  As we are running two texts for this project (some are using InDesign CS and some InDesign CS2), two PDF files have been created outlining the exact requirements for your peer assessment in Week 13.  These PDF files have been loaded onto UCSPACE.

GDT1.2 WEEK 11 > INDESIGN Master pages vs document pages Masterpages are like the original from which the document pages are ‘photocopied’ from. Masterpages do not print. When printing an InDesign document you are printing the document pages only. The only items that should be placed on Masterpages are: repeated items/objects/imagery (such as page numbers/background images), or ‘placeholder’ items which are empty or contain formatting which will be populated with live text or imagery on the document page.

GDT1.2 WEEK 11 > INDESIGN Text/picture frames vs Text/picture content The Black arrow selects the text/picture frame allowing you to: delete the frame from the page, move it, copy the frame and contents, adjust the frame size, or amend the ‘text frame options’.

GDT1.2 WEEK 11 > INDESIGN Text/picture frames vs Text/picture content (continued) Selecting a text/picture frame with the White arrow allows you to: Adjust/move individual points that make up the frame when clicked directly on the frame edge Edit the image inside a picture frame enabling you to: delete the image (not the frame), scale the image, or move the image within the frame.

GDT1.2 WEEK 11 > INDESIGN Paragraph Styles vs Character Styles Paragraph Styles Paragraph Styles apply to any text that sit between two ‘return’ characters. When you ‘Show Hidden Characters’ the ‘return’ character looks like this: ¶ A paragraph style can be applied to a paragraph or a single word, just as long as whatever amount of text sits before a ‘return’ character (¶) To apply a paragraph style to a paragraph of text, you merely need to single click somewhere in the paragraph (there is no need to select all the text within it). Paragraph styles are best applied to ‘blocks/bars’ of text.

GDT1.2 WEEK 11 > INDESIGN Paragraph Styles vs Character Styles Character Styles Character Styles apply to an individual word, or short string of words that require different formatting to the rest of the paragraph. Character styles are best applied to text requiring basic formatting such as Bold/Italic/ superscript / subscript or another typeface You do not apply a character style to an entire paragraph of text, or headings.

GDT1.2 WEEK 11 > INDESIGN Working with Colour and Bitmap Imagery A key question to ask: 1.Where and how will this image be used? (on screen, within a professionally printed document, on a home office printer…) The answer to question 1 will impact upon: what colour system to use (CMYK, RGB or SPOT (Pantone) colour) What, if any, colour profile you may need to embed in the file What resolution (dots per inch) the file will need to be Will I need to create a clipping path?
