1 Area of Composite Figures

2 Warm Up

3 Among the formulas needed to find the areas of composite figures are formulas for the areas of a circle, a rectangle, a triangle, a parallelogram, and a trapezoid. It is possible to divide up a composite figure in more than one way. To find the area of a composite figure, find the sum of the areas of the figures that comprise the composite figure. The height of a trapezoid or parallelogram always forms a right angle with the base(s).

4 Alicia is sewing a rectangular bedspread that measures 72 inches by 60 inches. The bedspread is red with a gold circle 18 inches in diameter in the center. To the nearest square inch, what is the area of the bedspread that is red? Justify your answer.

5 Find the area of the figure.

6 How do you find the area of composite figures
How do you find the area of composite figures? Divide the figure into simpler non-overlapping figures. Find the area of each simpler figure, and then add the areas together to find the total area of the composite figure.

7 An empty lot is being converted into a park with a playground area
An empty lot is being converted into a park with a playground area. The shape of the playground area is shown below. This area will be covered with recycled rubber chips. Each unit represents 1 yard. Installing the recycled rubber chips costs $52.50 per square yard. How much will it cost to install the rubber chips?

9 A banner is made of a square and a semicircle
A banner is made of a square and a semicircle. The square has side lengths of 26 inches. One side of the square is also the diameter of the semicircle. What is the total area of the banner?

10 Hexagon ABCDEF has vertices A(-2, 4), B(0, 4), C(2, 1), D(5, 1), E(5, -2), and F(-2, -2). Sketch the figure on a coordinate plane. What is the area of the hexagon?

11 A composite figure is formed by combining a square and a triangle
A composite figure is formed by combining a square and a triangle. Its total area is 32.5 ft2. The area of the triangle is 7.5 ft2. What is the length of each side of the square? Explain.
