3 Connection to National Standards
4th Grade Geometry PS11: FIGURES IN SPACE The learner will be able to classify and apply attributes of geometric shapes.    «««M Figures: Make Models/Sort The learner will be able to make models of plane and solid figures (such as triangles, quadrilaterals, circles, cones, cylinders, and rectangular prisms) and sort and classify models according to distinguishing characteristics such as sides, angles, lines of symmetry, faces, and edges.    «««M Points/Lines/Angles: Identify The learner will be able to identify and distinguish among points, lines, line segments, rays, and angles.

4 Points, Lines, Segments, and Rays
Term Definition Example Point A point is an exact location in space. Line A line is a collection of points that go on and on in both directions. It has no endpoints. Line segment A line segment is part of a line. It has two endpoints. Ray A ray is part of a line. It has one endpoint and continues on and on in one direction. Intersecting lines Intersecting lines are lines that pass through the same point. Parallel lines Parallel lines are lines that never intersect.

5 Angles

6 Polygons A polygon is a closed plane figure (2 dimensional) made up of line segments that are connected. Shape Is this a polygon? Why or why not? NO This figure is not closed. This figure has all of the requirements. YES This figure is not made up of line segments. NO This figure has all of the requirements. YES

7 Distinguishing Characteristics
1. Side – a line segment that is part of a polygon 2. Angle – two rays with a common endpoint 3. line of symmetry – a line on which a figure can be folded so that both sides match

8 Triangles Polygons with three sides are………….. TRIANGLES

9 Do you recognize any of these?
Quadrilaterals Quadrilaterals are four sided polygons. PARALLELOGRAM SQUARE RECTANGLE Do you recognize any of these? TRAPAZOID DIAMOND Here are some new terms!

10 Pentagons Pentagons are five sided polygons. Does this look familiar?
That’s Right! HOME PLATE

11 Hexagons Hexagons are six sided polygons. 1 6 2 3 5 4

12 Octagons Octagons are eight sided polygons. An Octopus has 8 legs!
Does the word “octagon” remind you of any other word? An Octopus has 8 legs! How many legs?

14 Geometry in the Real World
What do you see? Do you see any triangles? Do you see an quadrilaterals? Do you see any octagons? Do you see any parallel lines? Click the arrow if you need to review What else do you see?

15 Graph of Shapes in the Room
We can graph the shapes in our room

16 Tangrams Tangrams can help you learn geometry.
It is an ancient game that originated in China. You create pictures using geometric shapes like triangles, squares, etc.

Tangram Movie Watch this movie to learn more about tangrams. Click the movie button to play!

18 Play this game to build your own tangram!

19 Tangram Activity (Integrates Math, Science, and Writing)
1.) Take a set of classroom tangrams. 2.) Make a creative animal with your tangrams. 3.) Trace your shapes, so you have a picture when you remove the tangram pieces. 4.) Make a chart classifying your shapes. 5.) Write a paragraph about your animal answering the following questions: *What is the name of your animal? *What does your animal eat? *What is your animal’s habitat *What special things can your animal do (ex. Fly, swim, change color, etc.)? 6.) See if a partner can make your animal with the tangram pieces.
