3  A town meeting, held by the Pilgrims, was one of the first types of government in the New England colonies  Local refers to the place where you live. (QUAKERTOWN)  Today’s lesson focuses on how citizens participate in local government and what the local government does. You will also be able to identify the services provided by the local government and explain how they are paid for.

We give firefighters the authority, or right, to go faster than the speed limit so that they can save lives. Someone who isn’t a firefighter has the power to drive faster than the speed limit, but he or she does not have the authority.
