Scottish Industry After 1918 Lesson starter: 30 seconds to name 5 big Scottish Industries before WW1

Today we will… Learn why Scotland’s industries were in trouble after 1918 Explain what happened to the workers.

I can… Understand why Scotland’s industries were in trouble after 1918 Explain what happened to the workers

The Wartime Boom During World War 1 Scotland’s main industries did very well. There were lots of orders for steel to make weapons or ships to replace those sunk by the Germans. However when the war ended the orders for steel and ships also ended – why? The lack of orders also began to hit other Scottish businesses too.

Who Depended on Shipbuilding?. The hull is made of? Who supplied the food for the workers who made the ships? The fixtures e.g. furniture, lifeboats etc are made of? The crew? What powers the ship?

In your groups decide who would be affected if orders for ships declined. Which industry would be affected if orders for weapons stopped? Who would suffer if the government sent all its soldiers home (demobbed) and stopped orders for soldier’s rations? What happened to the women who had been doing men’s jobs while the war was being fought? Who Depended on Shipbuilding?

Scottish Industry after the War Copy the following note: After WW1 Scottish industry was in trouble. The orders for ships and weapons dried up. By 1923 shipyards on the Clyde were making less than a ¼ of the ships in 1914. Soon shipyards began to lay off workers. Less ships meant less steel and less coal and they began to employ less workers. By 1919 Scotland’s unemployment stood at 10%, far higher than England’s. Women were the first to be dismissed before men when the war ended. Those women who kept their jobs had their wages cut.

Agree or Disagree task On the next slide you will be shown 6 pieces of information. As a group you must decide whether you agree or disagree about whether the statement is correct. On your whiteboard write AGREE or DISAGREE

Agree or Disagree task Women would be sacked before men. Many soldiers returned home to find plenty of jobs available. To save money the owners of coal mines cut wages and jobs. There was nothing shipyard workers could do if they were made unemployed. Workers in England were much worse off than in Scotland. Scottish workers went on strike to force their employers not to sack them, this helped protect jobs.

Agree or Disagree task Once you have corrected all the statements you must write them in your jotter. Even the statements that are wrong can be fixed e.g. Workers in England were much worse off than in Scotland. = WRONG Workers in Scotland were much worse off than in England = RIGHT.
