Universities can now offer online advising through email or instant messaging. Seattle University has created Advising Notes which can be viewed by students and faculty through SU Online. Advisors electronically fill in notes about what was discussed during the advising session. If a student switches majors, the new advisor will know the advising history of the students before they meet. The text message alerts students about a dangerous situation on campus or school closures due to bad weather. Campuses are also sending up-to-date emails and pop up messages about attacks on campus. The emails and pop up messages include a description or in some cases a photo of the perpetrator. This allows students to keep their eyes open and alert officials if they see anyone suspicious. John Hopkins University is using smart video cameras around campus that rely on computer algorithms to detect suspicious activity (Rawe, 2007). This technology will alert security if someone is filmed climbing over a fence or loitering by a window or doorway.
