-made up of chemical substances called amino acids -Animal Proteins: meat, poultry, fish, milk, eggs -Non-meat protein: soybeans, nuts

4 Carbohydrates -an excellent source for energy
-two types: Starch and Sugar -starch: bread, potatoes, cereals -sugar: apples, honey

5 Fats -Energy source -Two types: Saturated and Unsaturated
-Saturated: come from animal fats -meats, milk, cheese -Unsaturated: come from vegetable fats -oils, nuts, avocados

6 Minerals Calcium and Phosphorus -helps the development of bones
and teeth, and muscular development Iron -essential substance in the blood Iodine -essential for proper functioning of the thyroid gland Potassium -helps maintain heart beat and nerve transmission Sodium -help maintain proper balance of the body fluids

7 Vitamins -aid in the utilization and absorption of nutrients
-two types -fat soluble: A, D, E, K -water soluble: B, C, Folic

8 Water -essential for your body -carries nutrients throughout your body
-helps digest food -carries waste products away from body -the primary component of blood and tissue -makes up 65% of your weight -8 glasses needed daily

9 Cholesterol -Two types: HDL & LDL -HDL: Good -LDL: Bad
