Webinar 1 – Reflections…

Challenges identified… How to train front-line staff when they can’t get to / spend time at workshops Level of participants / lack of foundational training Lack of management ‘buy-in” How to use and adapt training material & approaches Training as a one-off event Pre-workshop expectations/information (participants) Setting the ‘right’ (useful) agenda Difficult to find and coordinate with co-facilitators Problems with terminology Ensuring the ‘meaningful’ Administration issues

What has / is being developed? -CPWG IA Training Templates -Agenda templates -Training session plan including highlighting need for learning outcomes -PowerPoint and Trainers Notes in a standard format -Various IA Training packages -Agenda samples -PowerPoints -Where possible comprehensive trainers notes -Handout -USB Pack -Preparation list -Self Care Module Support given as needed by CPWG FP Consistency and Quality…

What can we do to overcome challenges? Having a learning and development vision and encouraging that across agencies Ensuring clear capacity building strategies and needs assessments are done in advance with a long-term vision Encouraging through global focal points, local level buy-in and management participation Ensure we are targeting the right people, at the right level, for the right training Preparedness… not feeling like we are ‘chasing our tail’ Ensuring coaching and mentoring elements are components of the long term vision of the training delivered, not just the training itself. Assistance to adapt materials Pre-workshop materials used as pre-requisites for training and how to build in assessments Global and regional resource pools to tap into

Frame the agenda… Nail down overall learning outcomes using most recent capacity analysis must have audience in mind Articulate the 3 clear (and if possible, concrete) overarching ‘take away’ messages + 2-3 per session Repeat them 3+ times to stick (put them on wall in training room or display in coffee break area) Create memorable ‘hook’: slogan, symbol

Assess participants’ learning styles Do participants tend to be comfortable challenging each other in public, doing role plays, a sustained simulation, etc?... What is the range of formal education and its culture (expert instructor vs. facilitator of learning journey)?... Is it feasible to do any self-directed learning in advance?...

Session Planning How is each session best served? – by a presentation / lecture –facilitated discussion –demonstrative exercise –some combination... Lectures are best for: –outlining models or theories, –describing practices or approaches, –outlining legislation or policy.
