2 How to Prepare for an Interview Research the job and organizationInternetCompany Literature or BrochuresCompany’s annual report, etc.Be prepared to respond to questions about yourselfExample: What are your strengths and weaknesses?Plan on what to wear to the interviewProject an image that matches the requirements of the job & companyBe as comfortable as possibleReassess your skills, abilities, experiences and accomplishments before your interviewPractice for the interview
3 The Day of the Interview Carry these items to the interviewSeveral copies of your resumeCopies of your ReferencesTake a professional portfolio or folder to hold your resume, references and to take notes following the interviewBe sure to take clear directions in getting to your interviewDress appropriately. First impressions matter.Arrive 10 to 15 minutes before the interview. Treat the receptionist and other employees of the company with the upmost respect. Greet company employees with a smile, good eye contact and a firm handshake.Leave your cell phone or other electronic devices in your car or at home.
4 During the InterviewMaintain a professional posture and a positive tone of voice. Show excitement for the position.If you are stumped on a question, you can always ask for a moment to think about it or ask to return to the question later.Never criticize former employers, bosses or co-workers while discussing previous employment experiences.At the end of the interview, collect a business card from each interviewer and thank the interviewer for their time.
5 After the InterviewSend a ‘Thank You’ letter to the each interviewer within 1 to 2 days after the interviewOnly 10% of candidates send ‘thank you’ letters, you may have an advantage if you send themTake time to evaluate your performanceWhat went well in the interviewWhat needs improvementWork on addressing areas of improvement
