3 Introduction to UOB/Microsulis/Acculis Microwave Therapies 1994 Endometrial Ablation – treatment of menorrhagia avoiding hysterectomy. 1998 Soft Tissue Ablation - the destruction of unwanted tissue, mainly tumours at surgery. 2002 Start development of smaller diameter devices for percutaneous use in an interventional radiological setting. 2006 CE mark and FDA 501(k) approval for surgical tissue ablation. 2010 CE mark and FDA 510(k) approval for interventional radiology soft tissue ablation.

4 Microwave Endometrial Ablation (MEA) Minimally invasive transcervical procedure that does not require hysteroscopic equipment Closed microwave system incorporating a hand-held microwave applicator that ablates only a thin layer of tissue inside the uterus without heating adjacent organs MEA Applicator

5 Microwave Tumour Ablation Microwave antenna placed directly into tumour at surgery. Antenna energised to ablate tissue with ultrasound / temperature monitoring. Technique involves optimisation of energy deposition from the radiated field.
