4 Phase 1 n VoIP using Abilene backbone – East/West coast schools – Test voice quality over long distance n Switch #1 in NYC – Colocated Abilene/Qwest POP – No. Virginia as an option n Switch #2 on West Coast – Colcated Abilene/Qwest POP n Schools pic traffic to Qwest n Qwest delivers traffic on IMTs with SS7 to TMC n Restrict traffic to participating schools only n “First call” 4/27/99 at Interent2 conference

5 UCAID Beta Test VoIP Phone PBX STP Call Server ISUP GSR Call Control Ethernet ABILENE POP Abilene Backbone Call Control MMS-1600 Local+Qwest Network Local+Qwest Network Call Server Ethernet Qwest POP

6 Phase 1 Requirements n TransMedia – (2) MMS-1600 Multimedia Switches – (1) Call Server – Engineering n Qwest – LD transport of calls to Abilene POP – IMT to MMS-1600 (T-1) – SS7 to Call Server – Engineering n UCAID – Power and space in Abilene POP – Pic calls to Qwest, local trunks – Program PBX for specific on net calls – Project Management

7 Milestones 1/992/993/994/995/996/997/998/999/99 Project Definition/Plan Begin Implementation Phase 1 Testing Phase 2 Testing “First VoIP Call on Abilene Backbone 4/27/99 Phase 3 Testing

8 Phase 2 n Expand trial to as many schools as interested n Test different methods of transport delivery – Public switched ATM PVPs – T-1’s routed calls from PBX – ATM and T-1 direct circuits eliminate message unit charges ($.065/call) but other costs and issues n Begin testing 6/1/99

9 Phase 3 n Move MMS-1600 back to campus n Test video and data applications n Move out of test mode into full deployment – Voice VPN n Traffic management, costs and expansion are key issues to address n Operational by Fall 1999

10 Actions n Meet to agree on test objectives and phases n MOU clearly defining roles & responsibilities n Assign UCAID project manager n Allocate resources n Begin implementation
