Comparative Politics: Group Presentation – Country Profiles

Assignment Details  Worth 15% of grade  Groups will be assigned (chosen at random on Monday of next week – though, if you don’t like your date or state, you may seek a volunteer with which to change groups)  I will accept volunteers for the first presentation, as it will come soon (week 3 – the United Kingdom) (You’ll get marked much easier if you go first)  Groups of 3 or 4  9 Potential Cases

More Details  You will provide an overview of your case study state  Details should include basic information about the state including, but not limited to:  Type of government, economy, regional security, some history  Additionally, you should identify an important current event impacting the state  Special attention should be paid to connections between chapter and case state

…and a Few More Details  Presentations will take place on Wednesdays after the break  There are no apparent time conflicts with other assignments in this course, so you are expected to present on the day assigned  If you have a conflict with an assignment in another class, be proactive and find a fellow student willing to change groups with you  If you are ill, please provide a doctor’s note and please be sure to keep in contact with your group and let them know if you are unable to present

Requirements  Accuracy!  Your fellow students are, in part, depending on your presentation for relevant info about your case study  Sources are both cited and academic (textbooks okay – Wikipedia isn’t)  Presentation: approximately 15 minutes  Each group member must provide a one paragraph (typed!) description of their work on the presentation by the end of the class on which they presented  Presentation needs to be provided via email to the instructor 24 hours before hand

A few hints  Become the expert!  Read the material in the book (case study profiles are provided at the end of your text!)  Use the corresponding chapter to focus your discussion  Videos are okay, but must not take up more than 3 minutes of your presentation  Your fellow students have a say in your grade, make the presentation interesting and engaging. Speak slowly and clearly.

Grading  Assignment will be graded out of 30 marks  Instructor Component:  Accuracy /10  Requirements /5  Class Component  Clarity /5  Knowledgeable /5  Quality of Presentation /5

Group Work Code of Conduct  Each group member should be treated with respect  Each student’s voice should be heard  If there are disagreements, do not let the fester, try to work them out immediately. If that doesn’t work please see me  While its hard to balance work perfectly evenly, it is expected that each group member pulls their weight  Be respectful of your group – if you haven’t done the work, don’t blame others for your choices.  Failure to comply to these basic codes of conduct could result in the removal from a group.
