1 Question 1: How do we define the personality traits of a hero? Usually a hero is a person admired for his or her bravery and noble qualities. Also a hero may be considered as a role model based on how much they give back to people in need such as Oprah Winfrey.

2 Question 2: How does a hero reflect his/her particular culture and society? Oprah has a huge following and many people mostly women try to lead by her example. What makes Oprah so endearing is that she shares her wealth with others who need it the most and people love that about her. Young women have turned their lives around by joining in on Oprah’s book clubs.

3 Question 3: How does a hero represent his/her time period and geographical area? Oprah Winfrey was born in the poor rural town of Kosciusko, Mississippi on January 29, 1954. In 1976, Winfrey moved to Baltimore, where she hosted a hit TV chat show, People Are Talking, after which she was recruited by a Chicago TV station to host her own morning show. Later she went on to pursue her two and a half decade stint as host of the wildly popular Oprah Winfrey show. (Oprah Winfrey Biography, ws)

In 2007 Oprah opened a boarding school in South Africa and the first graduation took place on Saturday the 14 th of January. Oprah spent 40 million to build the school. 72 out of the 75 students graduated and all 72 are headed to universities in South Africa and the United States. The school is spread over 52 acres and features world class amenities such as a state of the art library and dorm rooms. Education in Sub Saharan Africa lags behind the rest of the world. About one in three girls finish high school according to the South African Government. Winfrey first visited the school in 2002 when it was located on a farm, bringing gifts, clothing, books and teacher-training materials for its 1,000 students and staff. The school was later forced to move from the farm and relocated to a building with no windows, little electricity and running water, and only four toilets (Bryson).

5 Question 6: How did media help you reach out to others ? Oprah continued to work at WVOL in her first years of college, but her broadcasting career was already taking off. She left school and signed on with a local television station as a reporter and anchor. In 1976, she moved to Baltimore to join WJZ-TV News as a co-anchor. There, she co- hosted her first talk show, People Are Talking, while continuing to serve as anchor and news reporter. She had found a niche that perfectly suited her outgoing, empathetic personality, and word soon spread to other cities. In January 1984, she was invited to Chicago to host a faltering half-hour morning program on WLS-TV. In less than a year, she turned AM Chicago into the hottest show in town. The format was soon expanded to an hour, and in September 1985 it was renamed The Oprah Winfrey Show. A year later, The Oprah Winfrey Show was broadcast nationally, and quickly became the number one talk show in national syndication. In 1987, its first year of eligibility, the show received three Daytime Emmy Awards in the categories of Outstanding Host, Outstanding Talk/Service Program and Outstanding Direction. The following year, the show received its second consecutive Emmy as Outstanding Talk/Service Program, and Oprah herself received the International Radio and Television Society's "Broadcaster of the Year" Award. She was the youngest person ever to receive the honor (Academy of Achievement).

6 Question 7: What made him/her want to have a career of helping others everyday? The education of young women is also her passion she has set up an educational program for girls in South Africa for young girls who can’t afford an education.

"When you're doing the work you're meant to do, it feels right and every day is a bonus, regardless of what you're getting paid. The trick is to learn to check your ego at the door and start checking your gut instead.“ (SavvySugar)

8 Question 10: What is your biggest regret and why? In 1988, Winfrey lost 67 pounds in four months by eating virtually nothing. At the end of her liquid diet, she appeared on her show in a pair of size 10 Calvin Klein jeans pulling a wagon full of fat, representing the 67 pounds. But the minute after the show was over, Winfrey said she started putting the weight back on (Oprahwifreybiography).

Dr. Tererai Trent, a Zimbabwe-born woman who had to educate herself, was married off at age 11, and had to write down her dreams and bury them under rocks. Through all of this, she somehow managed to earn a Ph.D after moving to America. In order to properly commemorate Dr. Trent on her accomplishments, Oprah is donating the hefty sum of $1.5 million to help fund a school in her village back in Africa -- a step to hopefully giving some people the opportunity to have an easier journey to success than she had. 10 Question 12: Was there a certain person in your career that made a difference in your life? "My fourth-grade teacher, Mrs. Benton, was the first person that I really could see believed in me," Winfrey, 53, tells Parade magazine in its Sunday issue. "She would tell me that I was just the smartest little girl she'd ever seen." Winfrey explains, "I felt shiny in her eyes. It's why, whenever I see a little girl, I always stop to try and acknowledge her. I always try to have a shiny moment." (People, ws)
