17 What’s new for the Screen III
New norms and cutoffs for the Screens III based on nationally representative sample of 1,900+ children New validity and reliability research, including new accuracy data Content changes K assessments updated to improve alignment with standards, including CCSS OMS Updates

18 BRIGANCE KY Screen III Training
v7 2013: Same format, but carefully review each assessment for updated directions/ items/ scripting

19 Kindergarten Screen III Core Assessments
Major changes: New literacy and math assessments to better align to CCSS and state standards Removed: Draws a Person and Color Recognition New self-help and Social-Emotional Scale for ages 3-7 The K screen has changed: new assessments deleted less relevant assessments (Draws a Person and Color Recognition) better aligned with the Common Core and state early learning standards Three new early academic assessments (literacy and math) Recites Alphabet (moved down from first grade screen) Experience with Books and Text (new addition to screens) Sorts Objects (new assessment) New self-help and social-emotional scale for 3-7 years

20 Kindergarten Core Assessments
BRIGANCE KY Screen III Training Kindergarten Core Assessments 1A: Knows Personal Information— (also see Implementation Guide and KDE May Update) Different: Title of assessment (used to be “Personal Data Response”) Criteria provided for each item First and Last name, not “first” and “full name” Slight reordering of rest of items Additional guidance for some items Name Acceptable Responses: legal name or given name such as Katherine Nicknames like Katie for Katherine or Debbie for Deborah are allowed, if this is primarily how the child is known No Credit: if the child provides a nickname that is really a “pet name” (e.g., “buddy,” “sweetie pie”) or if the child provides just a first initial (e.g.,“K” when child’s name is Katie or Katherine) Address – Acceptable Responses: Number and street name (if there is a number and street name) No city or zip required (since either street or mailing address are acceptable) General description of area (if there is no number and street name) – this is according to the directions that allow for rural route, for example 2013: Changes to items and scripting Additional criteria provided

21 BRIGANCE KY Screen III Training
v7 Kindergarten Core Assessments 2A: Names Parts of the Body— (also see Implementation Guide and KDE May Update) Different: Only 2 same: shoulders, elbows; all others removed (heels, ankles, jaw, hips, wrist, waist). New: thumbs, fingernails, chin, chest It’s best to point to body parts on yourself (i.e., the person who is administering the screen) 2013: 2 items the same, 4 new items

22 BRIGANCE KY Screen III Training
v7 Kindergarten Core Assessments 2013: Slight changes to scripting 3A: Gross Motor Skills— (also see Implementation Guide and KDE May Update) It’s OK to demonstrate the skills for the child in all of the items (including #4) No big changes, just slight changes to wording.

23 BRIGANCE KY Screen III Training
v7 Kindergarten Core Assessments 2013: “Form” Vertical lines added to student page Criteria are under each item 4A: Visual Motor Skills — (also see Implementation Guide and KDE May Update) Different: Student page has vertical lines to make it easier. Use of word “form” instead of “shape” Criteria are the same, but are now under each item’s directions

24 BRIGANCE KY Screen III Training
v7 Kindergarten Core Assessments 5A: Prints Personal Information— (also see Implementation Guide and KDE May Update) Different: “Information” instead of “data” Slightly different scripting 2013: Slight changes to scripting

25 BRIGANCE KY Screen III Training
v7 Kindergarten Core Assessments 6A: Recites Alphabet— (also see Implementation Guide and KDE May Update) This is NEW! It used to be a 1st grade assessment Do not give credit for singing the ABCs Stop marking on the Data Sheet as soon as the child makes their first mistake, but you don’t have to interrupt the child and stop them. Note that the child gets 1 point per GROUP of letters. They must get all of the letters correct in that group in order to get the point. The OMS will do this automatically. 2013: New assessment!

26 BRIGANCE KY Screen III Training
v7 Kindergarten Core Assessments A7: Sorts Objects (by Size, Color, Shapes)— (also see Implementation Guide and KDE May Update) This is NEW! Use the plastic circles and squares that will be included with the new Screen III. Use “large” and not “big” when giving directions for first item 2013: New assessment!

27 BRIGANCE KY Screen III Training
v7 Kindergarten Core Assessments 8A: Counts by Rote—(also see Implementation Guide and KDE May Update) Different: Slightly different title (vs “Rote Counting”) Child is scored by groups of numbers (1-10, 11-20, 21-30) – the OMS will do this automatically. Just remember to stop marking the Data Sheet after the child’s first error. 2013: Change to how child is scored

28 BRIGANCE KY Screen III Training
v7 Kindergarten Core Assessments 9A: Matches Quantities with Numerals— (also see Implementation Guide and KDE May Update) Tip: It’s better to use objects as fingers can be tricky for the children to maneuver There are 12 foam circles included with the new Screen III that can be used here 2013: New title New objects Improved child page

29 BRIGANCE KY Screen III Training
v7 Kindergarten Core Assessments 10A: Determines Total of Two Sets— (also see Implementation Guide and KDE May Update) Different: There is only one domino for each item! Administer ALL three items 2013: New title Only 1 domino per item!

30 BRIGANCE KY Screen III Training
v7 Kindergarten Core Assessments 11A: Reads Uppercase Letters— (also see Implementation Guide and KDE May Update) **Important: KY requires that everyone must administer Reads UPPERCASE Letters** Remember: ONLY record 11A Reads Uppercase letters. If you want to assess 11A alternate Reads Lowercase letters, you can, but make notes elsewhere (suggestion: make a copy of the child page for lowercase letters and mark the child’s responses there). DO NOT mark on the Data Sheet or enter into the OMS! Same: 26 letters assessed Different: different order, slightly different font. 2013: Different order of letters Same: ONLY mark Uppercase letters

31 BRIGANCE KY Screen III Training
v7 2013: New assessment! Kindergarten Core Assessments 12A: Experience with Books and Text— (also see Implementation Guide and KDE May Update) This is NEW!!! Note that the book must have at least 3 lines of text on each page! You might want to have more than one book handy that you think will be appealing to children, that way you can ask the child which they’d like to read. **Important** the directions include TWO methods. Read the directions carefully so that you’re clear on which is which. You only have to do one of the two methods: 1) If you’re able to observe the child enough to answer the items yourself 2) Directly assessing the child (“child performance”) In item 2, note the specific directions to point to a word in a line of text (any word in a line except the last word in the line) In item 3, note the specific directions to point to the last word in a line of text (any line except the last line on the page) Not every single page in the book needs to have more than 3 lines of text, but you want the majority of the pages to so that you don’t have to fumble around when you’re screening the child.

32 BRIGANCE KY Screen III Training
v7 Kindergarten Core Assessments 13 Verbal Fluency and Articulation— (also see Implementation Guide and KDE May Update) Different: Title: In the Screen II it was called “Syntax and Fluency” Note that the order of the items is different Directions are slightly different Item #2: 90% of the child’s speech must be intelligible (Screens II did not specify a %) You don’t need to “assess” per se – you should be able to evaluate this based on the conversation you’ve had/observed during the screening process….**if** you’ve been able to get a minimum of four responses from the child to answer these questions (see the “Note”). 2013: Different order Slightly different directions

33 BRIGANCE KY Screen III Training
v7 Remember! For the K Core Assessments: Be sure to adhere to the Discontinue point Use directions and scripting as they are written in the Manual

34 BRIGANCE KY Screen III Training
2013: Improvements to the design Still no need to calculate scores! Overview of New Data Sheet Different: It’s been reformatted slightly Domain column has been added The assessment number has been moved to the main column The discontinue point information is more specific for each assessment You still don’t need to calculate the score At the bottom, the two sections have changed slightly to “Notes/Observations” and “Next Steps”
