2 Characteristics of Nickel It is one of only four elements that are magnetic at or near room temperature. Nickel discovered by Cronstedt in 1751 has: – Atomic number of 28 – Atomic mass of 58.71 – Number of proton – Number of electrons – Density of 8.9g

3 Characteristics of Nickel It belongs to group 10 (VIIIB) Nickel is classified as a transition metal. Transition metals are elements between Groups 2 (metals) and 13 (non-metals) in the periodic table. The periodic table is a chart that shows how chemical elements are related to one another. Nickel is closely related to iron, cobalt, copper, and zinc.

4 Characteristics of Nickel Physical: Nickel is a silvery-white metal with a slight golden tinge that takes a high polish. It is hard, Malleable, ductile, somewhat ferromagnetic. Belong to the iron-cobalt group of metals and is chiefly valuable for the alloys it forms.

5 Characteristics of Nickel Chemical: Nickel is a relatively unreactive element. At room temperature, it does not combine with oxygen or water or dissolve in most acids. At higher temperatures, it becomes more active, – e.g. nickel burns in oxygen to form nickel oxide(NiO). It also reacts with steam to give nickel oxide and hydrogen gas. 6 Important uses of Nickel It is extensively used for making stainless steel. In armor plates and burglar-proof vaults. The metal is corrosion- resistant hence can be useful in alloys, as a plating, in the manufacture of coins, magnets and common household utensils,

7 Important uses of Nickel Nickel is also very popular in the manufacture of batteries. Nickel is also used in electroplating, a process by which a thin layer of one metal is laid down on top of a second metal. It is also used to make heavy machinery and large containers in which large-scale chemical reactions are carried out.

8 Important uses of Nickel It is also used for plating and as a green tint in glass. Nickel is pre-eminently an alloy metal, and its chief use is in the nickel steels and nickel cast irons, of which there are many varieties.

9 Description of Nickel characteristics It was voted allergen of the year in 2008 by the American Contact Dermatitis Society. In nature it occurs combined with sulfur in millerite. – Millerite means a nickel sulfide mineral usually occurring in long hairlike crystals and sometimes used as a nickel ore. Nickel is an important cause of contact allergy, partly due to its use in jewelery intended for pierced ears. Nickel is a relatively unreactive element. Mallable, meaning it is capable of being hammered into thin sheets.
